Fucking nits

Help me!

10 days ago DSCs returned, with nits.

DSD had nits a month ago when she returned from a sports camp and she had one night at our house before going to her mother’s. We treated DSD that day and told her mother who also treated DSS (as he was with her, not us.)

10 days ago (night-time), we saw that DSD had nits as she couldn’t stop scratching her head and there were 2 live lice in her hair on her hairbrush.
We treated them, DH and me the following morning with dimethicone then wet combing with conditioner and a nit comb (nitty gritty). DSD13 allowed us to help her (long, thick, tangly hair) but then finished by herself. DSS12 had no lice but some old nit shells (white and halfway down his hair - 6 cm. or more from scalp.) DSD we had found 2 nits on her hairbrush and the part when we helped her comb we found 2 more, and she said she had found ‘some others.’ DH and I had nothing. We also washed bedding, towels, hats, combs and brushes.

We then treated everyone 4 days’ later as per the instructions however DSD dried her hair after doing the treatment instead of wet combing so had to redo it the following day. DSS had nothing, DH had nothing (he has short and thin hair and I cannot see any evidence of nits at all), I didn’t have any lice but found some eggs in my hair which I did my best to remove by hand (the nit comb doesn’t seem to get them out.) DSD said she ‘found some’.

Treated myself and DSS again today; he had nothing but I have four small lice and at least 10 eggs. I feel so itchy. I also feel as if I’ve ripped all of the skin off of my scalp by so much combing (after I found the first louse I just kept combing and combing until everywhere was clear). I can’t think of anything else.

The DSCs go to their maternal family in 2 days; we will treat DSD tomorrow and try to get her to let us help her (as we always do). Their mother is aware that they have lice and of the treatments we have done. Obviously we will check them when they come back.

We were treating every 4th day as that was the instructions on the dimethicone and on NHS website however I’ve since found out that you can wet comb every other day. If I start wet combing my own hair every other day, will I eventually be rid of these little bastards? How long does it take?! I feel desperate. Please help!

Dont apply to a sore scalp but the best thing to kill and stop them in the future is Turkish lemon cologne. Makes your hair smell lovely too! Contains alcohol but safely used here on small children throughout the years.

Duru spray on Amazon.

Thank you, how does it work?

There’s a specific protocol to follow that I learnt about on here. I’ll see if I can find it.

edited to add the link. DS had super thick collie length hair. And it was curly. This was the only thing that worked.

The Turkish cologne works in two ways! They hate the smell of lemons so that is the deterrent and the alcohol content kills the eggs and the live crawling nits.

It’s fantastic stuff that we discovered decades ago whilst on holiday.

There is no way you can treat/sort yourselves once every 4 days and expect that to be enough. You need to wet comb every day, twice. You also need to check each other. The eggs are tiny. Remember each egg has the potential to grow into a louse that lays 10 eggs per day. Pick them out with your fingers. The comb misses them. If you wet comb every day you should get any lice. Keep picking out all the eggs. And treat twice with shampoo, 10 days apart. Keep up the combing and checking every day for around 14 days. Then you will all be clear.

Get a nittygritty comb! They remove the eggs too. Comb with masses of cheap conditioner every day for a couple of days, or until you’re not finding anything, then every 2/3 days for 10 days - it’s always worked for us. I don’t rate the chemical treatments at all.

Wet combing with a white plastic nit comb twice a day.
Hedrin.

What did not work:
Tea tree oil
Straighteners
Neem oil
Insecticide treatments
Conditioner
Electric zapper comb
Pleas to school
Plaits

My DD had them constantly from age 4 to age 11 and so did I.

wet comb with lashings of hair conditioner. I also found sleeping with hair conditioner on seemed to help itching. Conditioner then shower cap thin microfibre hair turban. Wet it in the morning and comb through with nitty gritty.

clareth · 30/07/2025 13:17

Sorry@Letsd0this I missed where you said you already had a nittygritty. I think if you can bear to comb everyone and yourself every other day, loads of conditioner, until you’re not finding anything. You should be clear. It always worked for us.
I just wouldn’t bother with any chemicals. They’re really infective imho

RandomMess · 30/07/2025 13:21

Put the cheap conditioner on DRY hair then nitty gritty in front of the TV so much easier and effective.
