How long could you survive with what is in your house right now?

It seems every day that goes by the world seems more unstable. Its made me think about being better stocked in case of disruption of any kind (whether created by humans or just natural events like severe weather). How long could your family survive if you suddenly had no access to shops (either in person or online)?

I think Im going to eat down the freezer which is full of random things like one stick of rhubarb or a lone pork chop and then try to use the space more effectively to ensure we have a better store.

Ive always got full stocks in as I like to have a lot of choice of ingredients for cooking, especially with teens who suddenly request a particular me for them and their friends! And I hate running out of things so every item in the kitchen has at least one more in the pantry to replace it. Also I have lots of kilner jars for dried goods, nuts, seeds, rice, different pasta, dal etc. I reckon maybe two months of food for the family including the vegetable plot, fruit trees and chickens

3bluellamas · 29/07/2025 15:48

I think we would run out of protein fairly quickly. We do have lots of lentils since DH went through a phase of doing the main shop on his way home and for some reason bought a big bag of lentils every week for months!

probably about a month with some odd food combos!

NotMyRealAccount · 29/07/2025 15:54

Two days, because although there's lots of food in the house I'm down to my last few bits of chocolate.

HappiestSleeping · 29/07/2025 15:57

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback staying at the moment who would feed me for a good few days. Don't think k his owner would be too chuffed. Then my own Labrador, and a few tins of beans in the cupboard.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/07/2025 15:58

Not very long at all. A few days of dhal, a few days of pasta pesto, maybe a curry.

notacooldad · 29/07/2025 16:00

Probably quite a long time as long as i have a water supply.
Ive kilos of dried beans of different varieties, loads of spices a massive bag of onions.lots of oats, differerent flours pastas , yeast, sugars, dried milk and syrups.

frozendaisy · 29/07/2025 16:01

If it was a case of "don't care what it tastes like it's all we have"
a month, it would feel like a year with the complaining

frozendaisy · 29/07/2025 16:02

This is resorting to coffemate in tea type of thing

thistimelastweek · 29/07/2025 16:02

Probably a month but three weeks of that would be very dreary fare.

frozendaisy · 29/07/2025 16:02

Once the coffee ran out it really wouldn't matter

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 29/07/2025 16:04

About a month but I may get scurvy by the end of it

Navigatinglife100 · 29/07/2025 16:04

Probably a good year or more based on calories! We would have some strange combinations after about 2 months tho!

Once we run out we will still have our fruit cage, orchard and chest freezer!

needtostopnamechanging · 29/07/2025 16:05

3 days - no water

Makingpeace · 29/07/2025 16:05

Well we have a lot of herbs spices and flavour stuff in. Bag of rice and bag of pasta and a few bits in the freezer.

Probably stretch to 2 weeks 😂

stayathomer · 29/07/2025 16:06

The freezer is one of those things though, isn’t it? The amount of people after the big storm we had here that lost so much food because they’d stocked up and then the electricity went. Crackers, tinned foods, Pringles, popcorn … they’re what I’ll be concentrating on food wise this winter me thinks!!!

FionnulaTheCooler · 29/07/2025 16:07

I did a shop in the big Iceland the other day so the chest freezer is full, I'd have plenty of food for a while as long as the electricity is on to cook it. I've also got a good amount of tinned goods and bottled water in my Costco corner shelving unit in the garage. None of this is because I think WW3 is coming, I just took advantage of having teenage DD with me to carry the Iceland bags and Costco is a bit of a trek for us so we only tend to go maybe 2-3 times a year and stock up.

3bluellamas · 29/07/2025 16:08

Dog eats frozen raw food so takes up a lot of the freezer space. Might need to wean him onto grass..

I reckon I could survive for 3-4 weeks at least. I may run out of coffee and t-bags but they’re not essential anyway.
It would be cereal or porridge for breakfast. I could make bread. And I’d put a stew in the slow cooker. I trust the gas and electric would be on. Otherwise I’d fire up the
bar-b-que. wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

UpsideDownChairs · 29/07/2025 16:14

Oh a month - although it would get a bit weird towards the end, and we'd be desperate for something fresh (and milk)

OhNoMyChocMelted · 29/07/2025 16:15

Possibly 2 weeks but would end up boring pasta etc. However i haven't proper shopped for over a week so guess that isn't bad..
When I'm fully shopped I would say 6 weeks or more.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 29/07/2025 16:19

4 or 5 months, but only if my garden carries on giving. My 2 boys are very fussy so I buy their food in bulk from a wholesalers. I also buy meat, fish, cheese, butter in bulk. I would run out of cereal in 3 weeks and milk and bread with in a week.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/07/2025 16:21

Dd has just made 40 raspberry and white chocolate cookies as she likes baking🤷🏼‍♀️

Probably a 1000 calories in each one. So we’d survive a while.

3bluellamas · 29/07/2025 16:23

I do have a bread maker and about ten packs of bread mix so that would help actually

As long as the fridge/ freezer are working, ages. Several months minimum. The freezer is full (frozen chicken, veg, chips, cookie dough, pizza, pastry etc). In the cupboards, there are tins of beans, spaghetti hoops, fruit, vegetables, lentils and chickpeas, tomatoes. Jars of pasta sauce, curry sauce, apple sauce, jam, 1 kg of peanut butter, Nutella. I have part baked bread rolls in there and mixes for bread and cakes. I also have nuts, dried fruit, pasta, noodles, couple of kg of rice, three boxes of breakfast cereal and a big bag of porridge oats. Popcorn kernels too. Two big bags of flour, baking powder. Five different bottles of cooking oils. Jars of passata. Squash. There’s lots of fresh stuff as well.
