Teen boys and showers

How long is long enough for a teen/young adult male having a normal shower (washing short hair and long body) in your opinion?
Bearing in mind ever-rising water bills and high energy costs and money not growing on trees.

Without being graphic , your son is probably doing other things than just showering .

30 minutes if you were to ask my teenage boys 🙄3 minutes if you ask me.

I wish there was some sort of timer I could install that just turns off the hot water after three minutes. Even three minutes is more than needed tbh.

My teen was quite quick 5 min maybe.
My dh takes forever. I bath whilst he showers generally , he just stands there for easily 20 min before his wash / shave / hair wash , he finds it relaxing.... no he isn't doing anything else , i can see through the glass.
It drives me loopy.

Me too, 3 minutes has got to be enough to wet, lather and rinse hair and body, surely? Extra time allowed if caked in mud after rugby but otherwise, that hot water should be off

My DH on the other hand has the world's shortest showers. 20 seconds. To the point where the white towels are actually grubby because he's not washing dirt off properly after gardening so the towels cop it.
Which is also very irritating.

When we first got our big shower the teens were having so many and spending so long in there that the water company wrote to us, increased usage, they suggested that we might have a leak and perhaps get it looked at.

So we did, our lovely plumber came round, we did a few tests with the turning it off at the pavement meter, turning it back on taps, etc.

Yes it was the increase in number and lengths of showers!

BertieBotts · 29/07/2025 11:43

I don't think they are necessarily "doing other things" - I think most teenagers would be too self conscious that someone might guess that's what they are doing.

I think they are just a bit time blind at that age and oblivious to how long it's taking them. The feeling of warm water on your body is comforting.

Besides they are usually making up for the previous 8 years where they acted like they were allergic to the shower Grin

With girls it’s hair masks/leg shaving and in excesss of 30 minutes!

mindutopia · 29/07/2025 12:25

I just wish I could get my teen to shower at all. It’s like I’m the most horrible abusive parent ever because we expect daily showers.

Me personally, I think a 10-15 minute shower is normal, but I’m not massively concerned about water use and our water is heated largely by solar panels anyway, so doesn’t cost us anything directly.

HerewardtheSleepy · 29/07/2025 12:33

It's some years since I was a teen boy but I'd say 10 minutes minimum.

I seriously doubt it, speaking as a former teen boy myself. Not in the shower.

Cut the electric/turn off boiler etc
