"Savoury" herbs in desserts. Strawberry and basil, apricot and (possibly) oregano.

I've just bought what I thought was a kind of strawberry trifle with an innocent looking and entirely decorative mint leaf on top.

On closer inspection and tasting, it's basil. I can't decide whether I support this trend or not.

I've had a lemon and vebena sorbet in the past which was lovely but don't think I can get on with this strawberry and basil concoction.

I mean, I'll eat it but, er, no, wasn't really expecting that. I got an apricot slice thing last week from the same bakers which had green herby bits in it that I thought must have been marjoram or a more subtle kind of oregano.

Do you like these herby puddings?

I love herby puddings. Also love herby cocktails. My favourite is lemon and lavender and peach and thyme.

Yum! And bigger yum to herbs in my booze!

Oh, I think the apricot thing was possibly thyme now you mention it. I suppose this strawberry thing just wasn't quite what I was expecting.

I'm perservering with it though, until my tastebuds adjust.

As it happens, of all the concoctions you’ve mentioned the only one I wouldn’t like would be lemon verbena - it would remind me of posh-not-posh hand soap! I’m a big fan of savoury-tasting desserts. Also love eg watermelon and feta salad; roasted peach and goats cheese salad with rocket and balsamic vinegar etc. The balance has to be right though. It’s just another skill to master.

Having said that, I absolutely HATE raisins/prunes/dates in my meat course. I won’t eat a tagine. IMO that balance isn’t right.

I like fruit in salads. Strawberries, feta, basil, balsamic type thing. Loads of different options.

I think the bridge too far for me with Morrocan food was pastilla. I've tried to like it, I really have and as always, people say, "You just had a bad one" but I've had plenty over the years and it's just too complicated for me.

I love loukoums though.

Try strawberries with a few twists of black pepper, or drizzled with ouzo for an aniseed kick.

A family member made a Gordon Ramsay pudding once - I think it was set tarragon cream or custard, with strawberries or raspberries. Couldn’t get my head around it but it was really good, I was surprised.

I love savoury fruit too. Basil also works well with nectarines.

Not a fan of herbs in my dessert and hate mint but do love fruit in salads and hot savoury dishes
