Magazine subscription for kids - recommendations please

I have a 6 year old who is a very competent but reluctant reader. As he's got better at reading, more challenging books are overwhelming him; hes autistic with ADHD so grasping his attention can be challenging but a magazine format seems to appeal. It's a fine balance between stretching him a little, and losing his interest all together.

He's bright, inquisitive (we've just had "what is gravity?" 5 minutes before bed 🙄) and loves learning the meaning of new words. I think something sciencey would probably work well for him.

Any recommendations please?

Whizz Pop Bang is a science magazine my kids really enjoyed.

Pinkcherry26 · 27/07/2025 21:40

We have had subscriptions for the Week Junior, National Geographic Kids and Aquila over the years.

We like the Lego magazine in this house.
My 7yo DS also really likes the Bunny Vs Monkey books as they are written in a comic book style.

The Beano is brilliant and I also recommend What on Earth magazine (formerly Brittanica)

Phoenix here too, but it's not sciency. Loved by reluctant reader who is 8 (started reading it at 6) and my reading-lover is just starting to cool off it at almost 12. We got an offer that was 6 for £1 I think? Worth trialling a few, just make sure to put in calender to cancel!
It lead mine to the books bunny Vs monkey, dogman, cat kid and happy hills. Most could be read in under half an hour iirc.
We also get Lego Life delivered.
There's free ones available through our library app if you don't mind using a screen for it.

Science-y wise we had whizz pop bang for a year. They send you a list of things by email to make sure you have on hand before the mag arrives. Again, you can often get a trial subscription for cheap.

Highly recommend National Geographic Kids. They collected cards monthly too. We get told lots of genuinely interesting facts. Had since aged 8 would recommend for many years.

Thanks everyone! Have had a good look through and signed up to NatGeo kids for 6 months and an initial subscription to Whizz Pop Bang. Hoping first issues are here in time for plane entertainment when we go on holiday 😊
