Child sleepwalking trying to get out of the house

DD (10) has sleepwalked on and off for years. Usually she just wanders around the house. About 6 months ago she started actively doing stuff whilst she was asleep (playing with Lego or once she was wandering around with a box of cereal and a fork!). Last night I found her at the back door, naked (she’d taken her pyjamas off) with only her school cardigan on! She was fumbling with the lock trying to get out.

no recollection of it at all this morning

I’m going to take the keys and put them up high; not happy with the fire risk but really worried she’s going to get out of the house one night

What a worry. I have no experience of this but would suggest seeking medical advice soon

Can you ask your local fire service for advice? I know they do safety visits for vulnerable people so I’m sure they could advise about this too.

How about a sliding bolt way up high?

My dB used to sleep walk & my dad fitted in bolts at the top & bottom of all the external doors. Consider doing this @Letsgotosomewhereelse it's very easy & inexpensive to do this.

My daughter used to sleepwalk, usually when she was overtired or stressed/ worried about something. Look at sash jammers for the door- no keys needed, you can fit it right at the top. Also, a door alarm that you can turn on at night so it wakes you if she manages to open it.

My parents put little bolts on all the downstairs internal doors, because they had alarm sensors on them and I kept opening them and waking everyone up. It's fairly easy to bamboozle a sleepwalker, apparently!
