Rheumatoid arthritis and miscarriages?

Two part question, anyone got RA? If yes other than medication what makes it better? I’ve read the mediterranean diet to help with inflammation?

Second Q - anyone had miscarriages with RA? I’ve read you are more at risk with it?

My posting is a mess! Anyway I can’t vouch for this but I do know that Stamford is respected, as is Zoe and Tom Spector.

I have RA. Other than the medication I try to keep my weight down and move my joints as much as I’m able, so lots of swimming but I’ve also found personally that saunas, steam rooms etc just make it feel nicer.

There is research out there about the Mediterranean diet (although also apparently tomatoes and peppers etc aren’t good for it). If I’m honest I just try to eat healthily and avoid UPF just to keep my weight down and put less pressure on my joints. The video above was interesting and I respect the source but you do often get a lot of ‘advice’ from people with not much knowledge about it, especially those who don’t understand the different types.

I’m afraid I don’t know much about the trying to conceive side but some of the medications eg methotrexate aren’t suitable for those trying to have a baby, is that maybe what you’ve heard? I don’t know if RA in itself gives a higher risk of miscarriage.

I have RA and haven't ever had a miscarriage (although I hadn't been diagnosed with RA when I was pregnant). I don't find anything helps much apart from steroids. I should be going onto a biologic soon and I'm hoping that will help.

I don’t have RA but I have other autoimmune conditions and so had a test for NK Cells with my fertility clinic. I think the idea is with autoimmune conditions you can be more at risk of high NK Cells. For me the treatment is steroid tablets and intralipid infusions. You would probably have more luck positing in the infertility board if you have more questions about NK cells.

I've got RA and the only thing my consultant said regarding diet is to not put any weight on if possible.
I don't eat bananas as I have found they make my joints worse - no idea why but rheumatology nurse thinks it could be due to high potassium but who knows?
I'm on anti TNF now ( biologic) but there are different drugs and it's trial and error which ones will work for you - you need to be careful if you're trying for a baby as some of them can affect an unborn child
NRAS charity have lots of info on their website

I have RA but only since menopause which is very common. Apparently significant hormone changes are thought to be the trigger so not sure what the effect of all the hormone changes in pregnancy would be - maybe more flares? I think you really need to talk to a specialist on the subject to get reliable information. I do know that RA sufferers in the USA who were on MTX did start to have issues when some of the states changed their abortion rules as it can be implicated in miscarriages so again you really need speak to someone who knows about the appropriate medication if you are ttc. With regard to diet etc I exercise every day to keep my joints mobile and supported well by the muscles around them. I have also been following Michael Mosley's 800 diet (based on the Mediterranean diet) a couple of days a week to keep my weight steady but have developed gastritis (inflammation of the stomach) and have been told to stop eating down onions, peppers, tomatoes, spices, citrus fruits etc which really makes up a large part of the diet so not sure what to do about that. I think probably the RA medications have made my stomach susceptible and the diet tipped me over the edge. I am always a bit sceptical about wonder diets - my grandmother who had very bad RA tried them all without any noticeable success. I do include some anti inflammatory food such as almonds and salmon but really just try to have a balanced diet and exersize as much as I can. It seems to work but then I am on two DMARDs and a biological so I am sure that is mainly what keeps me well. Good luck.
