touch your elbows to the wall behind/floor underneath (or just generally put them in that position so they are opposite your ears)

bluecrochetedplane · 26/07/2025 21:09

I can't picture it so don't know if I can do it. Anyone care to share a pic or diagram

thaegumathteth · 26/07/2025 21:21

i also don’t understand because option 1 seems too east and option 2 seems impossible

Whatisthisword · 26/07/2025 21:25

When you say touch the floor underneath do you mean when lying down? because I've been trying to do it from a standing position and not sure it's possible.

Pyrus · 26/07/2025 21:25

No, should I be able to?

Same here!

OP, this is mumsnet. If you asked if "can you tuck your legs into your arsehole" you would have a chorus of "easily", "and my arms", etc.

You win!🏆

saxonyv · 26/07/2025 21:36

sorry wrote op and then went off to do something and forgot to check back in.

I actually can’t do that move, if I really force it I can but it really hurts, especially in my right shoulder, I don’t have any disability or obvious injury that could prevent me so I’m not sure why it hurts so much!

thank you for having a go everyone, was just trying to gauge if it was normal really.

@saxonyv why would I want to?

saxonyv · 26/07/2025 21:38

@cremedelacraps yes I did think I might get a mix but I don’t have anyone in my house that isn’t super fit, they’re all athletic in some way and could all do it easily (although legs up arsehole might be a stretch even for them 😆)

Sounds like you need to stretch rhe chest or shoulders, OP. Try what you are describing lying on the floor, with supports under your arms so you can feel a stretch but it doesn't hurt. Relax and breathe. Try it for 2 miniutes at a times.

TheOliveFinch · 26/07/2025 21:41

I think so many of us spend a lot of time with our upper back rounded using computers that the front of our chest is tight and it is difficult to get our shoulders back

JuniperJuly · 26/07/2025 21:41

Not easily but I have rolled shoulders and had a torn rotary cuff which has never fully recovered.

So do you mean that if I’m lying on the floor with my hands being my head then my arms are flat against the floor?

saxonyv · 26/07/2025 21:44

Sorry for confusion with my wording, definitely not to touching the tips of your elbows on the wall, although as @cremedelacraps pointed out someone will probably say they can!

i mean the back of your arms/elbows to lay flat against the wall/floor.
Hope that makes sense because I’m in bed so can’t be bothered to go and get a pen and paper to do a diagram

frozenshoulderhell · 26/07/2025 21:47

Nope (see username) I cant reach behind my own head or do any reaching whatsoever due to bi lateral frozen shoulders! Currently awaiting surgery so fingers crossed it won't be too long until I can...

Like this, for all those that needed a diagram

OP posts:
saxonyv · 26/07/2025 21:49

Also apologies that I was so vague in my op.
I am able bodied and don’t have any injuries or disabilities and should have stated that originally, I apologise to anyone I have caused offence to as that wasn’t my intention.

I think the OP means this exercise known as Wall Angels (but I might be wrong)

Platypusdiver · 26/07/2025 21:56

I can do that but not the should hand behind back (hbb) stretch. One hand over the head reaching down and the other hand meets it from the waist reaching up. (Some people use a towel to help the two hands meet).

Or, god forbid the yoga praying behind your back!

OP it sounds like you need exercises for shoulder rotation.

pizzaHeart · 26/07/2025 22:00

Lollylolo · 26/07/2025 19:52

Sorry but I must be missing something? If I put my hands behind my head my elbows are pointing forwards so how would I be able to have them touch the wall behind me? If I extend my arms/elbows outwards then the backs of my arms/elbows would touch the wall? Is that what the OP means?

Glad that it’s not only me who is confused.
diagram please OP

Nousernameforme · 26/07/2025 22:10

If i interlock my fingers behind my head which is the vision I get from your op i can bring my elbows forward to touch the floor bending at the waist and I can have them pointing backwards so touching a wall if I reverse into it. But I have hypermobility and a wider range of motion than most. Also im probably going to sublax my shoulders if I keep at it. I dont think that even the fittest of people should be able to do that.

Roundaboot · 26/07/2025 22:14

@saxonyv you might have a frozen shoulder. I had one a few years ago. It started as general stiffness and developed into pain in that shoulder. It got much better with physio but I still don't have full mobility back in that shoulder and so couldn't do what you describe

This is a chest stretch. As PP said, a lot of people are spending a lot of time bending over with their shoulders rounded. Do this stretch regularly to help counter that

I have frozen shoulder! Have anaesthetic arthrogram next week but not holding out much hope!

how was the surgery?

It was ok. About a week off work to really recover and getting it all moving asap was key. Pain was not bad at all and I quickly gave up the painkillers as they were bunging me up. Before the surgery, I had physio first for about 6 months before they said it was the worst they had seen and I really needed to take next steps. So that was a steroid injection into the joint - first one had v little impact, the second one they also pumped fluids into the joint. Much better outcome although rather an uncomfortable experience. However I had about an inch of movement in the end so surgery was really the only option unless I wanted wait for the 1-2 years they take on average to unfreeze!! Good luck!!

I don’t understand
