Boy and Girl Names which are disappearing

Was thinking about this today - all the names I remember from my childhood and my parents' friends just don't seem to exist any more. I think it's sad as so many were good, strong, dependable names, such as:-
Mark
Matthew
James
Stephen/Steven
Geoffrey
Christopher/Chris
Nicholas/Nick
Anthony/Tony
Ian
Simon
Andrew

Jane
Linda
Patricia
Caroline
Julia
Lindsay
Sarah/Sally
Louise
Phillipa

Do you think these names will come back, once the current craze for either made up or Biblical names has passed?

What about

keith
sharon
Julie
etc

ColinCaterpillarsNo1Fan · 26/07/2025 12:24

Gary
Gareth
Barry
Cuthbert
Ian
Neil
Victor/Vic
Clement

FluffMagnet · 26/07/2025 12:24

Of course they'll come back, just like our grandparents' name are coming back now.

Nicholas and Christopher were top of my lists anyway. Sadly DH wasn't a fan.

Around half those names are still in use amongst teens and young adults of my acquaintance.

alphabetti · 26/07/2025 12:30

names tend to go round in circles so once those names are associated with great/great grandparents and seen as slightly different they’ll start to be used again. I’m 42 and when i was a child the only Arthur i knew was Arthur in eastenders and now theres so many Arthur’s my youngest daughters age (4.5yrs)

SriouslyWhutNow · 26/07/2025 12:39

James is literally the number one most popular name in Northern Ireland year after year, I don't think it's dying out at all.

That's interesting - I had no idea. Love the name!

At least six of the names on your boys list are Biblical names!!

Sorry - I meant the more unusual names which are popular now, such as Noah, Isaac, Zachary, etc.

James is 35th most popular boys name in England and Wales and the default middle name.

I know a few little Matthews too (147th)

I expect those names will become popular again once those named that become great grandparents. Few people were calling their kids Nora or Arthur in the late 80s/early 90s

Gary
Gareth
Barry
Cuthbert
Ian
Neil
Victor/Vic
Clement

Victor is the only one out of all of the name on here I like, it’s much prettier than Mark or John. Clement is nice but I wouldn’t use it!

They're not just popular now, they have been popular for centuries.

I have an Isaac in my family tree from the mid 1700's.

Snorlaxo · 26/07/2025 12:50

The names will come back into fashion when the people with those names become grandparents and they get grandchildren names after them (middle name)

Kit (Christopher ), James and Pippa (Philippa) are not that unusual ?

scotstarstrikestwo · 26/07/2025 12:51

Andrew is still popular. I have an almost 8 year old call this and there's another in his class. Also know younger ones

InMyOpenOnion · 26/07/2025 12:51

Names tend to come in cycles as people look for names that aren't as common. When I was at school it was all Sarah, Claire, Russell, John etc.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 26/07/2025 12:54

Norman and Theresa.
Not had those for a while.
Tracy.
Sharon.
Darren.
And will there ever be another Demi?

Ah, I see. Isaac has been popular for years, though, and isn't showing any signs of going anywhere just yet.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/07/2025 14:46

When I was a child (1960s), all the boys with biblical names had New Testament names: James, John, Andrew, Peter, Paul, Stephen, Simon, Thomas, Timothy, Matthew and Mark. Joseph seemed to be used solely by catholics in those days.

The only common Old Testament name that I can think of from those days was David.

I don’t know anyone over 30 called Isaac, Reuben, Moses, Noah, Joshua or Zachary/Zachariah. I suspect that for most of the 20th century many of those names would have been used almost exclusively by the Jewish and/or Black communities, whereas now they are much more mainstream.

Excellently put! Wish I had been clearer in my original post!
