Or do they taste of nothing these days? Ive never been a massive fan but wanting to add some healthy fats to a meal or two i gave one a go. What a waste of calories...it tasted of nothing. What happened?

They taste like cold potato.

TheChosenTwo · 26/07/2025 14:00

Ours have been okay but the stones have been getting bigger and the actual amount of avocado reducing!

MeringueOutang · 26/07/2025 14:04

Now you mention it, they do seem a bit flavourless these days. They seem to go from unripe and inedible to completely off far too quickly now as well. A lot of things do.

PaxAeterna · 26/07/2025 14:07

They need salt here, maybe some lemon. When you go to a country that grows its own avocados and they are fresh, they taste amazing.

Radiatorvalves · 26/07/2025 14:08

They need garlic (a very little), salt, pepper and a splash of lime or lemon juice.

TonTonMacoute · 26/07/2025 14:08

I love them but have more or less given up buying them.

The problem is that when we want to eat them they are not in season and the don't really travel well. I get mine from Crowdfarming, they come straight from the farm in Spain in season, which is February March time.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/07/2025 14:21

I mean i always thought i was missing a trick not being into all that avacado toast malarkey. I actually can only eat them if I put enough lime juice or salt or whatever on them as im not keen but figured it would be ok with salad 🤣 but it activists as bad as i was expecting but only cos it was tasteless .

Glad its not just me. Hopefully the nutritional value they bring has not disappeared alongside the flavour

The taste does vary wildly. Recently had some flavoursome ones from Asda.

Fridaynightfish · 26/07/2025 14:23

They are often disappointing - M&S ones are the best I feel, and Lidl too.

Tesco - awful, stringy. Never ripen properly.

HollyBough · 26/07/2025 14:23

They need to be properly ripe and mashed with a small amount of feta and chopped fresh chillies, salt and good olive oil. And eaten on good toast.

Beachtastic · 26/07/2025 14:24

I'm not sure. I keep buying them and forgetting about them until they're ready to throw away 🤦🏻‍♀️😞

LittlleMy · 26/07/2025 14:35

Mashed up with zero additions and then served up on seeded or sourdough toast with a drizzle of sriracha is yum!

However, I’ve given up buying them unfortunately as no matter where I get them from they’re either underripe or rotten inside. Even if I buy them as ripe they’re always rock hard or mushy and spotted brown inside and I just can’t afford to spend up to £1-2 a go every week 😕

Yes this. And they're not in season in Europe at the moment so will be coming from further away which is so not so good for flavour either. It's like eating strawberries or asparagus in December, there's just no point.

The avocados I got from crowdfarming in February were incredible!

ItWasTheSaddestOfTimes · 26/07/2025 14:44

Had some from Tesco recently which would not have smashed even with a very large hammer. The ones before that were brown inside. I had given up but then went to Costco and got a bag of ones which were the size of my head and have been perfectly smashable and the right colour inside and almost tasty if loaded with salt, pepper and lemon juice.

Whatwouldscullydo · 26/07/2025 14:48

I just bought one from lidl. I dont shop there usually as I have the worst luck with their food and am.always disappointed but it is the nearest shop to me amd I was low on time. Needless to say it was another dud 😭 so were the prawns. Watery amd tasteless. Still i needed the fat and protein so I ate them any way.

They just taste of wet nothing these days. I’ll only eat one if it’s swimming in vinegar with loads of salt and pepper. Used to love them.

Beachtastic · 26/07/2025 14:51

The only nice ones I've had are bought in one of those Asian corner shops with the greengroceries stacked on the pavement. I only know this because they are ready to eat right away, rather than forget about and throw away a week later. A good avocado is worth its weight in gold, but hard to find!

Miley23 · 26/07/2025 14:51

We've had some awful ones recently, all sort of stringy. Such a waste of money, they aren't cheap either.

anyzee · 26/07/2025 15:00

I just eat them as part of my Greek yogurt topping for breakfast, just to get the good fats in! Tasteless on their own, but edible when mashed up with other stuff. So mashed with raspberries, strawberries and kiwi they add bulk and are fine. I treat them as a fruit!

I wouldn't eat them as veg in a salad or with savoury dressing. Just as above.

slightlydistrac · 26/07/2025 15:01

Not that I like the avocado, but I think it's the same with a lot of fruit. They pick it far too soon, before it has ripened enough to continue ripening properly and actually be nice when you eat it. I gave up eating peaches and nectarines for this very reason years ago. Plums are another culprit - you buy them when they are hard, wait for them to soften and then discover they have started to go bad in the middle instead of ripening properly.

anyzee · 26/07/2025 15:04

Frozen (and defrosted) fruit is great for taste. Raspberries, blueberries, and mango are the best IMO. I use them in desserts, cakes, and on yogurt. As for fresh fruit, I only eat in season strawberries and raspberries, everything else seems to be imported from the back of beyond now. Obviously because it may be out of season, but we don't grow a lot of the exotic stuff here anyway.

Kellywiththelegs · 26/07/2025 15:05

Agree it’s not just avocados, apples just taste of crunchy water these days, strawberries the same.

I love frozen cherries. I have several bags in my freezer. Greek yogurt tastes like crap so the juice from.defrosted cherries helps!

Yeah I can't remember the last time I had a nice strawberry. I had some delicious blueberries from m&s though. Weird cos I dont like blue berries but im craving them at the.moment mixed into my porridge.

I fell in love with kisabell apples but they have disappeared now.

Im hoping the melon I just bought isn't too much of a disappointment

I like avocados, I usually get mine from M&S. I eat them with industrial amounts of vinaigrette or garlic mayonnaise, or sometimes with prawn cocktail.
Catching avocados in the narrow window between them being rock hard and too mushy is a life skill! 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑

LadyKenya · 26/07/2025 15:31

I love avocados, and eat some most days. I have found that the nicest ones I get, are from Marks, or Waitrose. I have had the odd one, that is rock hard, and doesn't seem to soften properly. I eat them sliced up, on the side, with a salad, or sandwich, and just sprinkled with salt, and pepper. Lovely🥑
