I hate periods so much

A miserable and immature thread but ugh I hate periods so much. I've been in agony with pain in my lower back and hips despite taking mefenamic acid and paracetamol constantly. I feel nauseous from the constant tablets. I feel disgusting, even straight out the shower. My skin has a weird smell when I'm on my period that I hate. I don't know if it's pheromones or something but I just smell off. I woke up to find that I've leaked through a night-time pad and period pants, despite not having that heavy of a period, through my white sheet and onto my brand new mattress. My hair is greasy. Skin bad.

I just hate it, I feel so uncomfortable in my own skin and overstimulated when I'm on my period. I wish I could never have them.

@miserablee I sympathsise, maybe if your pain is severe it might be an underlying condition. It could be fibroids or ovarian cysts.
I recommend going to your GP ask for a pelvic ultrasound, a transabdominal ultrasound and a transvaginal one to see what they find.

Are you symptoms just on your period or elsewhere during the month? (Because if its just on your period, unlikely to be endometriosis).

Also what symptoms do you say you have? What symptoms do toy gave during your period? And if you have symptoms not on your period - what are they? Is the pain worse on or off period?

If you had a transvaginal and/or pelvic ultrasound normally it can pick up adenomyosis.

I recommend asking the GP to try the pill and/ or mirena coil can be amazing with heavy bleeding and pain. You might try different pills first. Yes, they treat the real cause as well (mirena will may the uterus lining thinner, less bleeding and less cramps), but with the pill, will treat symptoms. So definitely try that, sometimes the progesterone only pill (mini-pill) can be better for some.

Also ask your GP for mefenamic acid and/or naproxen (NSAIDs which help a lot) and tranexamic acid (helps reduce heavy bleeding) - you need to start taking it days before your period starts so that it can work at best capacity. The same with ibuprofen and/or paracetamol. Start taking it 3/4 days before and it will be much better.

You may have 1. Primary dysmenorrhea (heavy bleeding and painful periods with no condition or cause or 2. Secondary dysmenorrhea so a condition e.g endometriosis or adenomyosis causing it. You will need to try NSAIDs and mirena/pill and Tranexamic acid first before any further scans like ultrasound and MRI. Often if the pain is significantly reduced with said treatments its more likely (not 100%) to be primary dysmenorrhea. Also very dependant on whether you only have symptoms on your period or across the month as to whether you have primary or secondary.

Then if ultrasounds pick up on anythibg (pelvic ultrasound or transvaginal) you may need to have an MRI to see endometriosis. However, the only way for definite diagnosis is a laparoscopy and then they will often excise the endometriosis tissue if they find it etc. But endometriosis is a chronic illness and cannot be cured, after surgery it will grow back, it cannot be excised from everywhere to leave organ functioning intact and then post-surgery adhesions often form.

The main symptom of endometriosis is not actually period pain because endo is not a period condition - it's a whole body inflammatory condition where the endometriosis tissue even produces its own oestrogen and the pain is felt throughout the month not just when on your period. Often endometriosis on the ovaries can form cysts containing old blood called endometriomas (also known as chocolate cysts) which can be very painful. Another popular cyst is haemorrhagic ovarian cysts with endometriosis.

But you could also be adenomyosis where the lining of the womb grows into the muscle of it, but unlike endo is localised to the uterus only. Thus, symptoms are mainly a couple days before a period and during your period. Main endo symptoms:
• Irregular or heavy periods
• Pelvic pain
• Pelvic pain on opening bowels (dyschesia) and wider gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhoea amd constipation)
• Pelvic pain on passing urine (dysuria) and bladder symptoms sometimes
• Referred pain to the tops of the legs or back
• Fatigue

Crucially you can still have endo even if they don't see it on the scan, the only clear way for diagnosis is a diagnostic laparoscopy and then mangagement can look like pain medication depending on how severe your pain and symptoms are (can be opioids, NSAIDs) and contraception and hormonal treatments (gonadotrophin releasing hormones).

The coil is amazing!! No periods.

lonelyplanet13 · 26/07/2025 10:13

I second the coil !
I spent years being embarrassed by flooding , changing every twenty minutes . Waking in the night etc .
it’s just an unpleasant experience that became unmanageable. Had a coil fitted for the first time in my life 18months ago purely for the purpose of stopping my cycle . It’s honestly life changing

I feel you, after waking up in a blood soaked bed this morning. Straight into the shower and already just feel gross.

Get a waterproof mattress cover for under your sheet, lifesaver for me in terms of protecting my mattress.

Otherwise, just empathy here. Sick to death of them.

its5oclocksomewheresurely · 26/07/2025 10:19

I get 30% Codeine prescribed by my GP for period pain - much stronger than paracetamol. I'd recommend trying it.

I'm 55 and periods are gradually subsiding. I've only had 2 this year so far, and it's fucking fantastic!

WhoAteAllTheDinosaurs · 26/07/2025 11:01

Had mirena a year ago. Has been amazing - no periods at all. The freedom has been awesome.
Until this week, when I started having a not very heavy but very painful period and am miserable again!

BashfulClam · 26/07/2025 11:26

Yeah I’m 46 and always had serious cramp and I went to my Dr and said . I’m just done with them and got the mini pill but it hasn’t stopped the bleeding, I don’t want the coil or implant so I’m stuck with them. Can they not send me a text each month ‘hey you aren’t pregnant and everything back here seems ok!’ I hear you as I despise them!

Tia247 · 26/07/2025 12:04

They're horrible OP, just horrible. I am literally counting the days till menopause, I don't know how anyone can moan about it when it means no periods anymore, I mean what could be better than that?

Bryonyberries · 26/07/2025 12:11

I hate them too. At 49 I’m looking forward to them stopping in the next few years but at the moment my newest symptom is a hormone migraine that I get usually the day before or first day. That’s only happened this last year or so.

Mary46 · 26/07/2025 12:35

Op I got coil in. Heaven no bleeding. God was tiring heavy bleeding. I do not miss it. Im 50s

Juliajojo · 28/07/2025 00:22

I 'm fed up with them also. My oldest DD is close to starting her first period and so I am telling her positive things like "it's great, it shows she is healthy and totally normal" while inside I am thinking periods are the worst. I hope she does not get them as bad as I do.

nothingbeats · 28/07/2025 00:34

Urgh I hate periods too. I’m on so heavy for the first couple of days that I have to wear adult nappy’s 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m 41! They are a game changer though.

Anon1231990 · 28/07/2025 01:28

Massive sympathy, they are awful. If it's helpful to anyone I have suffered with horrifically painful periods forever, friend recommended theses cbd infused tampons a few months ago, I didn't hold out much hope but they are great. I also get/got waves of nausea and actual vomiting on day 1 and 2 and these seem to have significantly reduced that symptom.

Full disclosure for me they don't get rid of the pain completely, but they are such an improvement, also I don't love the applicator, it's a little stiff, and they aren't cheap so I use them on my worst pain days.

yourdaye

Make sure you amend the box contents as they are mixed, but you can swap to all cbd. If you use my referral code joindaye-bd6b3d you get 20% off your first order

Second the recommendation of a waterproof sheet. I have a "half sheet" that I put on the bed so at least I dont need to clean the mattress

pushthebuttonnn · 28/07/2025 03:55

I take the combined pill without a break (ok with doctor) No bleeding for years. Fantastic.

I do the same - combined pill and don’t take a break.

GlitchStitch · 28/07/2025 04:44

My periods were so heavy I needed an iron infusion. I started taking the progesterone only pill about 8 months ago and I've barely had any bleeding since. Would definitely recommend.

mumontherun25 · 28/07/2025 11:13

I hear you OP. I am so godamn sick of them. GP suggested the Mirena Coil. I’ve got a prescription and will have it fitted when I start my next cycle.

The PMS is absolutely woeful, I would love to find something to help. I am 43 and over the past 2 years PMS has been hitting me like a tonne of bricks.
I thought I might be peri. GP done blood tests but ruled it out. Although I’ve since learned those blood tests are not reliable or a definitive marker for peri.
I am a sweaty, hot, anxious mess in the week prior to getting my period. I cannot control my emotions at all. Luckily I have a regular cycle as I cannot make any plans and have to cancel meetings with work and all sorts during the pre menstrual phase as I am literally out of control.

Great to see the positive feedback on this thread regarding Mirena.

best of luck with your plight!

Well let’s hope you have an ‘easy’ menopause because it’s horrendous for many women.

ChompandaGrazia · 28/07/2025 11:25

I hate them too. It’s just so unnecessary. Surely there has to be a better way. I’ve been on the mini pill for the last ten years and not had one since. I’m 50 now and I’m hoping I can just stay on it until they go entirely.

ShowOfHands · 28/07/2025 11:42

I've been bleeding for 12 weeks. Flooding, clots, waking multiple times in the night. Tried lots of things to stop it and had a Mirena fitted on Thursday. It hasn't helped yet.

Believe me, I sympathise.
