Do you prefer shopping at Vinted or charity shops?

I used to work in a charity shop and loved going into them. However, I’ve lately been using Vinted and I now much prefer it due to the filter system and children’s clothing on it is relatively very good for a bargain. I’ve recently bought my DD (8) about 25 items from there as she’s had a growth spurt, all brilliant condition for about £170 including shipping and fees. Brand new it would’ve cost me closer to £500 and a lot of it you can’t tell hasn’t just had the label taken off. This is mainly stuff from Next, a few individual bits from M&S/Zara/Primark/John Lewis. Only one thing I got a refund for as it wasn’t in a good condition. I can’t imagine how long it would be taken me to find this amount for the value in charity shops, not to mention things I like and correct size. I’m totally converted to Vinted now and have made donations to charity instead of going into the shops but curious to know what others think?

I promise I don’t work for Vinted 😂

Veering more towards Vinted these days, also buy a few things from FB sites for particular brands I like. I used to buy a lot in charity shops but I think they siphon off the good stuff now to sell on Ebay, or anything decent is quite expensive.

Vinted is MUCH better.

I always buy BNWT, and I’ve had some proper bargains. Also, I like being able to make offers on items. I’ve saved a fortune on baby clothes. Managed to get a whole wardrobe of clothes in the next size up, for a fraction of the price. I just wash them as soon as I receive them.

Charity shops for me - I live in an upmarket area and the brands available are great.

I’ve tried Vinted but, although I’ve got some bargains, the fact that I can’t try them on puts me off. Yes, it’s a good buy but not if it doesn’t suit me.

Also by the time you pay £8 for a dress, plus postage and fee, it’s £12 and that’s what it would cost in a charity shop.

Vinted. Charity shops used to be better, but I also used to live in a very expensive part of the UK and the clothing in those shops were generally very good quality and beautiful. I lived there long before covid and the existence of Vinted though.

I think the days of charity shops in wealthy areas being donated a designer bag and a well meaning but clueless volunteer pricing it for 50p are long gone.

For clothes I'm more into vinted. I really like seasalt organic cotton dresses in the hot weather and I got some lovely bargains (unlikely to find something so specific in CShops. Also now that Vinted is there, and so easy, quality stuff is harder to find anywhere else.

I doubt many people who have the stuff to sell on Vinted and the wherewithal to do it are in that category though. It's mostly people who could choose to give the stuff to a charity shop but want a bit of extra cash for themselves. I'm not supporting that.

Really? I'm a care worker on minimum wage, and I sell bits and pieces on Vinted. It's mainly good condition clothes that don't fit any more, or DD's clothes to buy the bigger size up.

DS(17) sells things on Vinted to pay for his car insurance, as I can't afford all of it myself.

None of my friends have much money. We just sell on Vinted to bring in a bit extra to cushion the cost of living.

I have a great local charity shop which is very reasonable and has very friendly staff. I go in weekly. However, Vinted has such a range of goods, that Charity shops can’t compete.

RandomUsernameHere · 26/07/2025 20:41

Vinted. I have no desire to go rummaging in a charity shop on the off chance they have what I need.

Zempy · 26/07/2025 20:47

Definitely Vinted. Charity shops are so expensive in comparison.

NotMeekNotObedient · 26/07/2025 20:54

I like both. But I do clearly prefer Vinted as I spend a lot more on there.

I think it's the search on Vinted that makes it so great - type a blue Boden t-shirt in size 4-5 and you'll get loads of options! The postage is an additional cost but for the convenience, it's worth it for me. I like to look late at night and on the train.

I still frequent charity shops, but not so often. But partly that is because I have less time to trawl them now I have kids. I still donate fairly frequently and so have a look in then. I still get great bargains but am select with which ones I go to - both ends really; posh villages and council estates - but I'm looking for different things. I definitely find the ones on the hight street in our local commuter town a bit over priced and the brands aren't good.

I like a charity shop so I can try things on, so great for womens wear, definitely had a few bits on Vinted that were too small when they arrived or just not to my style.

I've never shopped on Vinted. I tried selling some items there... the were same items I was routinely selling on eBay at the time but I got no sales on Vinted so I gave up.

Anyway, it's rare I buy clothes without trying on 1st. So obviously charity shop wins. I Can't get a fit I like unless I try on first. I am astounded at how many clothes listings (anywhere, new or 2nd hand) don't give very explicit measurements for: inside sleeve length, rise on trousers, inside leg, range of waist & hip measurements, drop from collar to front and back hem on shirts, exact length of skirts... without that info no chance at getting me a good fit ... also leg width I suppose so then trousers are super tough to get right buying online.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 26/07/2025 22:33

I used to love browsing the charity shops... but they became expensive...im now addictied to Vinted... now more so that I've lost weight ( mounjaro).so im selling and buying like mad.. l love it and have a look every day.

PassingStranger · 26/07/2025 23:46

When they calculate the postage on Vinted that's just for the envelope isn't it?
What about the packaging.
Ebay allowed you to set your own price didn't they end invlude the packaging?

Nagginthenag · 26/07/2025 23:52

I haven't found anything decent in a charity shop for months. Found some lovely things in the past, but all the good stuff seems to be pulled and sold on line now. Everything in the shops is shein rubbish, and supermarket clothes for sale at almost new prices. There's no thrill at finding a proper bargain any more.

Charityshopqueen · 28/07/2025 21:37

I like both but have just bought a Hobbs dress on Vinted for £8. They asked for 10 and I offered 8. Hope it fits?
I got a lovely designer dress in a charity shop today for a fiver. Tried on 7 in total. That's one good thing about charity shops you can try (usually) before buying.
