Leaving Bristol after 20 years - bucket list.

We're moving out of Bristol in two weeks.

Have studied here, worked here, had children here, so have done a lot of the well known 'things to do'. Very familiar with the SS Great Britain, enjoyed the theatres, graffiti, treasure hunts, ghost trails, WTC, BZP, Bristol/Bath cycle path, have eaten at Whapping Wharf and St Nicks Market etc. We've got 8 Gromits left to see on this year's trail!

Do you know any hidden gems or quirky Bristol things I might have missed, to help break the monotony between packing boxes. Still have young children so heading out for dinners and raves not really going to make the cut, but any attractions, walks, history and things like that are great.

Something I learned today is Blackbeard was from Bristol and drunk at the Hatchet, so having walked by that a thousand times I shall go in next time 😁

Whatcha got?

Have u been to the botanical gardens? Worth it?

Also, curious / nosy where u are moving to next..

You know, I'm not sure if I have. Maybe at uni, which was a long ol' time ago.

Work is moving us to the country and also closer to the seaside :) Going to be a real change of pace. I fear that when we have teens we might some pushback about why we left a city which is regularly on lists such as 'coolest places to live in the UK' 😅 But I personally am excited for all it'll bring, and

I studied at Bristol uni 👍 Have you been to the Clifton Observatory and looked through the camera obscura? It’s great for spying on people 😜 I always used to like going to the waterfront and going to the Stable for the cider tasting board 😋 Five small ciders on a board and the flavours changed regularly.

Balloon fiesta in a couple of weeks if you're still here.

Kayaking on the harbour for a different angle

M32 flea market

Have you been to the secret bars - I e down in waterside and the other up in Clifton? (If they are still there!)

Clevedon Marine Pool
Slimbridge Wetland Centre (ok, not actially Bristol).

myladyjane · 27/07/2025 07:41

Henleaze lake is wonderful but maybe not for small smalls as it’s very much for swimmers not players. If you like water then West Country water park out towards Bradley Stoke has an inflatables, paddle boarding and a cafe with lovely cake.

the wild place? Although it won’t be really worth it until the gorillas have moved in.

if you go to slimbridge you could stop at Berkeley castle, red hot poker in hand as you pretty much drive past it.

Another vote for Wake The Tiger. It’s an interactive immersive art installation, takes a good couple hours to go through. My partner is from Bristol and he took us there for our first date and I loved it!

The botanical gardens are lovely too! ☺️

This thread is msking me home sick.

Thing I remember that aren't on your list.
The bristol to bath cycle path. You can cycle it all the way to the big children's park in bath.

Notwiththebullshizz · 27/07/2025 21:01

The observatory, the natural slide on Clifton area, going to the field at the back of the airport and watching the planes come in (they fly over head really close) hermits cave, redcliffe cave, Valentine bridge and Clifton rocks railway.

Teeheehee1579 · 27/07/2025 21:07

Your thread is also making me home sick and I moved out of Bristol 30 years 😱 ago! Have been back with the children for visits but I miss it hugely. We live in the countryside and love it but Bristol will always feel like home to me. Good luck with the move!!! Reading the thread and thinking we must book another trip there!!!

Whycantyouwhisper · 27/07/2025 21:12

Wake the tiger
Clifton observatory cafe
Beeses

West Country water park
Portishead Lido
Tobacco Factory - theatre show. Think also a market in a Sunday

YouShouldBeDancingYeah · 27/07/2025 21:28

Slimbridge Wetland Centre
Wild Place
Berkeley Castle and the Edward Jenner museum (Berkeley town is very pretty too)
Wotton Under Edge (beautiful climb to Tyndale Monument and views across the Cotswolds)
Thornbury (first mentioned in the Domesday book) has a market every 4th Saturday and nice eateries. Thornbury Castle was commissioned by Henry VIII and he brought Anne Boleyn there for a stay. Sadly he beheaded the architect before the castle was finished. Now is a hotel and restaurant but v pricey.
Noahs Ark Zoo Farm
Westcountry Water Park

Good luck with the move!

CelestialCandyfloss · 27/07/2025 23:53

I will always have a place in my heart for the gypsy caravan in the Bristol Museum. I adored it as a child and still do, loved peeping through the glass at the neat little caravan inside. It's not changed in over 40 years!

Beanzmeanz · 27/07/2025 23:57

The Wave is very much open. Went bodyboarding with the kids on Friday!

ninja · 27/07/2025 23:58

I assume you’ve found the cocktail bar through a secret door in a bookshop - my daughter studied in Bristol and it was he coolest thing she showed me!
