If attendance at school was mandatory on Christmas Day, would you keep your child off

Yes for me.

Yes because we are Christian.

gamerchick · 24/07/2025 15:49

It's not going to happen though. There would be uproar by all the teachers for one Grin never mind any of the other staff or the transport that gets the kids there. It's not just about kids going to school.

StaySpicy · 24/07/2025 16:07

Yes, as a religious festival we observe.

Honestly, if we lived in a country where it wasn’t a bank holiday, we’d probably move it to the nearest weekend.

WhiteAndChocolateFuzzy · 24/07/2025 16:33

In a nominally Christian country this would not ever happen though...

Venalopolos · 24/07/2025 16:34

No I’d do on the nearest weekend day. Similar to birthday celebrations.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 24/07/2025 16:35

If it was a non Christian country, I would move it to the nearest weekend.

gotellsomeone · 24/07/2025 16:35

If the school system changed that much that they no longer got Christmas holidays and had to go in on Christmas Day then I don’t think I would have my children in school at all.

EscargotChic · 24/07/2025 16:37

Is this actually about keeping your kids off school for an important non-Christian religious festival? In which case I’d hope the school would be flexible.

Ponderingwindow · 24/07/2025 16:42

Our household really celebrates the solstice, we just do it with a broadly Christmas wrapper because of our secular culture and family history. It is convenient to celebrate on the 25th right now. If there was school and work on December 25th we would just move it to the actual solstice and take that day off. If I’m going to take a stand, I’m going to do it on the 21st which is the correct day to celebrate.

Fearfulsaints · 24/07/2025 16:43

Probably.

I would celebrate after school.

I think churches would respond by holding an early christmas day mass before school.

Both my parents did shifts when I was growing up, so I didnt grow up with the same expectations of Christmas day being a day off I suppose.

ExponentialDelivery · 24/07/2025 16:48

No, they'd go in and we'd celebrate in the evening like we do for weekday birthdays.

UsernameCreateded · 24/07/2025 17:12

I would also celebrate on the solstice, and take that day off if they were meant to be in school that day. (Usually but not always 21st Dec).
Not that fussed about the 25th tbh.

RaininSummer · 24/07/2025 17:14

If they were at school then many of us would also be at work so any celebration would be moved to another day.

mindutopia · 24/07/2025 17:20

I’d probably quite enjoy having the middle of the day to get stuff done. 😂 We don’t ever visit family for Christmas (because no one will host but us), so we’d always be home.

I’m technically Jewish (though we celebrate Christmas and Easter in a secular feast day sort of way). My kids go to school on Jewish holidays and generally I work too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

MaryGreenhill · 24/07/2025 17:21

Of course

NazeLife · 24/07/2025 17:24

No, because if that was the case obviously we would be in a culture where the vast majority of those celebrating Christmas would be doing it at the weekend. The actual day doesn’t matter, but it’s nice to have everyone celebrate it at the same time.

WhatNoRaisins · 24/07/2025 17:25

I think I'd be really loathe to relocate anywhere where you'd be in school on Christmas Day. It was a big deal when I was a child and I like my kids to have the same tradition.

PestoHoliday · 24/07/2025 17:28

I've taken school attendance policies as more of a guideline than they would like, to be honest.

LeaAndDer · 24/07/2025 17:28

It’s not so your question is irrelevant.

TooBigForMyBoots · 24/07/2025 17:29

Yes.

mysecretshame · 24/07/2025 17:34

I'd send mine in if we were here.
Up early for Father Christmas (their choice), school all day with a packed lunch then home to a lovely dinner.
Not sure how teachers would manage the festivities though.

Kendodd · 24/07/2025 17:35

If I lived in a non Christian country I would probably have a small celebration in the evening and a bigger celebration on the nearest weekend. Like birthdays

Wolfpa · 24/07/2025 17:38

I have worked every Christmas Day for the past 10 years it would help me out if I could send the children into school and celebrate when it was more convenient.

triple pay for Christmas Day.

Lambswools · 24/07/2025 17:42

No, if I was living somewhere where it wasn't a holiday, we'd celebrate at the weekend.
