Cancelled zoo trip- how can I make today fun for DD4?

Fedup2910 · 24/07/2025 07:07

We were meant to be going to the zoo today, but DD8 months had a raging temp and very unwell.
Any ideas how to make the day not suck for DD4? She’s going to be heartbroken that we can’t go. She’s been ill for the first days of the holiday so we have exhausted the ‘rainy day’ activities already- e.g. dens, play dough, painting.
Luckily I have DH here as a poorly baby is no fun!
Thank you in advance x

Divide and conquer.

And if you don’t trust the dad / fear he won’t manage as he’s useless and lazy, ask your mum to pop in mid way through to check.

And also in that subject, he needs to step up sometimes even if you’re a sahm and he’s the type that thinks he’s a big man with an important job that pays for everything.

'Get your mum to pop in'

and

'Step up sometimes'

Jesus

Don’t cancel! Just one of you take her. You can’t cancel for this.

What a depressing response 😩

There are some things you can watch live from zoos . I couldn’t tell you where to look but I’m sure if you search live zoo animals ???? Just an idea. My son used to watch the dolphins

Duiprinelloo · 24/07/2025 07:53

Eh? Two adults, two kids. One takes her to the Zoo surely.

@RentalWoesNotFun

Why do you assume :-

  1. OP’s mum lives local
  2. OP’s mum isn’t working or is free?
  3. OP’s mum is alive?
  4. That DH needs to “step up and that he thinks he’s a big man with an important job”

Where did the OP say her husband was useless?

DongDingBell · 24/07/2025 08:07

Yep, I'm with the others.
One parent at home with baby, one parent at the zoo.
An 8 month old wouldn't have got much from.the trip anyway.

Ohthatsabitshit · 24/07/2025 08:15

I’d just tell the four year old we’d go another day. Go for a drive if the baby is well enough or stay home and do normal things.

Eleanorlock · 24/07/2025 08:19

Good heavens op
the solution is so obvious

take her!!!

Eleanorlock · 24/07/2025 15:31

Please say you went and had a special day with your DD 1-2-1 Op?

although I think fact it didn’t even occur to you maybe indicates that sadly you didn’t do this

Maybe she didn’t want to leave her poorly 8month old ? Maybe the dad took her , maybe they rescheduled.

"get your mum to pop in"

Ffs why are we still perpetuating this crap.

  1. Infecting another person with a potential illness isn't a great idea.
  1. Stop putting responsibility for childcare on women.

good point re illness. Hadn’t crossed my mind it may be catching.

im not deliberately putting it on the woman. I agree that men too should step up. However it’s the woman happens to be the one writing the thread not the man Shes looking for ideas. Im being realistic because many women don’t want to leave their poorly kids with the dad and would indeed prefer their mum. That’s just how it is in some households. Whether it’s politically correct or not.

Hers may not be one. However if so, Im trying to offer a half way house solution which may give the OP confidence to leave the baby knowing he/she will be in good hands if the father happens to be a useless type.

perhaps we shall never know and it will forever remain a mystery!
