How do I find out my child’s time of birth?

They were born by C section and it’s not on my maternity notes or in their red book. I have both the long and short birth certificates and it’s not on either.

Request your hospital notes and it'll be listed there, as will all the time stamps for the C section procedure which is quite interesting to read through.

Do you have their hospital wrist/ankle bands. The time used to be recorded there. Not sure if it still is though…

Have you looked on the letter that the hospital should have sent your GP, notifying them of your c section and birth. Mines called notice of maternal transfer and has everything recorded on it.

Do you have an app like badger notes? Mine is all on there.

LottieLovesLemon · 23/07/2025 20:37

I don’t have the wrist bands or any other maternity paperwork unfortunately . It was 17 years ago so no apps then either.

It was on a letter I got from my midwive while I was in hospital. It confirmed weight, time and date of baby boy Louisiana. It was an official letter on headed paper.

This was just over 20 years ago, but I remember the letter. It was a starting point before I registered his birth a week later.

Am I the only one thinking.... you were there, surely ?

My dc are all much older than 17, but I remember when they were born.

Some births don’t go that smoothly! I wouldn’t have been able to pin it down more accurately than a 6 hour window if it wasn’t on the birth certificate.

Sometimes a woman has to have a general anesthetic for a cesarean section, especially if she has had a spinal injury or spinal issues in the past. If a mother was under general anesthetic and her baby's father is no longer around, she might not know the exact time (rather than knowing it was in the early hours of the morning or whatever). It could easily not be foremost in your mind after delivering under general anesthetic.

Well if I could remember, I wouldn’t have asked how I could find out!

I know it was around late morning/ middle of the day but not the time and whilst there are lots of other little details on my notes which I have kept, I don’t seem to have anything with the time on.

Your GP will have your hospital discharge form, the time, along with everything else, including the Apgar scores, so very detailed will be on that form.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 23/07/2025 21:34

Why does it matter? DS2 was born by Caesarian and I know it was sometime between 10 and 11 am but couldn't be more accurate than that. He's now in his 20s and I've never needed to know the exact time of delivery. I'm sure it must be recorded somewhere but it's irrelevant.

AuntMarch · 23/07/2025 21:36

I get it, I'd quite like to know how long my dc was but have no idea!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/07/2025 21:42

@AuntMarch i know my DS2s length and weight because they were big but can’t remember his time of birth because I hadn’t slept in 36 hours (for more than about an hour when they finally gave me an epidural). I know it was sometime between 6-7am but lost his little bracelet with the time on. I’d love to find out.

I knew roughly what time of day it was, but didn't think about looking at the clock while trying to get the child out safely. One with heavy intervention, one that popped out by himself. Luckily their dad was there and noticed the time. But I don't recall it being on any documentation.
