Do you have an inner monologue?

And if you do, do you talk to it or is it more like a voice over in your head?

Yes. And both - it can be a voiceover but I also talk to it. I also use the plural eg “we could try doing such & such”. I have tried to imagine what it might be like to NOT have an internal monologue but find it impossible.

SoftandQuiet · 23/07/2025 06:57

Yes, it's a way of planning ahead mostly I think eh Right, I'll go to the woods; then pick up milk, bread, bananas; get home and do the washing...oo could have cheese on toast for lunch. That sort of thing!

Slightlysimi · 23/07/2025 07:08

I thought everyone did. I’ll have a full on discussion with mine when I’m driving around.

StrayGoose · 23/07/2025 07:10

I do. I also have ADHD. DH says he doesn’t experience this.

Ayeayeaye25 · 23/07/2025 07:13

Sort of. I/we sort of play out conversations in my head so if she says this I could say this or should I say this first and think how it might play out or I think about why so and so might have done or said such and such or why they reacted like that etc.

Or I think about getting steps in how to get them in and wonder should I eat all of that, some of it or just not start it.

Yes I have full conversations with mine out loud! Its my go to person! Lol mens heads are vacant of this!

sorrynotathome · 23/07/2025 07:18

I don’t have ADHD or autism. According to google, the majority of people do have an internal monologue.

R0ckandHardPlace · 23/07/2025 07:18

Yes, it never shuts up! Until recently I thought that everyone had one. I was amazed to discover that some people don’t.

It really fascinates me how people have thoughts if they don’t hear words in their head?

DinoLil · 23/07/2025 07:20

Yep!

Does everyonr not have something similar?

morellamalessdrama · 23/07/2025 07:22

I don’t have a monologue, my husband finds it really strange as he narrates everything in his head. I just kind of think stuff, and then do things which isn’t a very good explanation…

Nannyfannybanny · 23/07/2025 07:27

Yes, and not ND.a friend at work once told me I was nuts. I'm pretty sure a lot of people do, and don't admit it! My lovely late mum, told me it was the only way to get a sensible answer to your questions🤣

This, it’s less of a monologue and more of a “person” that I control…

I can think things or not think things, sometimes it’s quiet up there. I can have a conversation with myself, but I could easily talk out loud instead of talking in my head. It’s not a constant narration.

Renamedyetagain · 23/07/2025 07:31

Constant narration, but also lots interrupting and talking over etc. Recently diagnosed with extreme ADHD which is somewhat of a relief! It's exhausting to live with and very hard to concentrate on one thing at a time.

The plus side is I am naturally very creative and curious as I constantly change tack or question things. But as I get older I just see it as a pain in the ass.

Medication is helping to focus.

Steelworks · 23/07/2025 07:34

Not a monologue as such, but I play out scenarios in my head, which seem realistic. Ie. I imagine an event and how it’s going to pan lot, and then am almost surprised when it doesn’t happen.

Agree! But on the other hand I don’t see pictures in my head at all.

Mine is a constant narration /conversation. It goes quiet if I’m really concentrating like reading or doing a crossword.

Lunaballoon · 23/07/2025 07:36

I do but it’s more repeating certain things over and over.
For example if someone says something that I interpret as critical of me, I’ll ruminate and repeat it in my head over and over. Same with getting random ear worms stuck in my head. I think it might be an OCD/stress response.

Eyesopenwideawake · 23/07/2025 07:38

Pretty much everyone does – it's the subconscious mind chattering away. Some are quieter, some are noisy but we all have them.

Dr13Hadley · 23/07/2025 07:40

Yep. Full on conversations, arguments the lot. Doesn’t ever be quiet. I have to listen to audiobooks to go to sleep to drown it out! I have ADHD though …….
