Giving up the scales!

I'm not yet entirely sure what I want out of this post.

I'm currently in therapy and have been for a few months for various reasons - mainly infertility struggles and anxiety.

I'm someone's who's struggled with disordered eating for many years.

After a session with my psychologist today, I'm throwing away my scales.

Has anyone else been through this?

Absolutely! I haven't had bathroom scales in the house for years.
I use how my clothes fit and mirror for weight reference.
Occasionally my GP weighs me and if I'm feeling really curious I can use the scales in the pharmacy.
Just another item of misery kit that carries bad juju.

Good for you, OP!

Thanks for replying! I hope it's as freeing as it sounds. I do need to lose a little bit of weight for IVF so I am going to have to weigh myself at some point but there's scales at the gym I could use every couple of weeks or so - it's gonna take a lot of willpower not to get on them every time I go.

I've recently been diagnosed with anorexia and the scales have been hidden since then and I've been forbidden from weighing myself at home (clinic still do it from time to time). I'm still tempted frequently though!

I've thrown mine out entirely to prevent the temptation of getting them out of their hiding place.

@aredrosegrewup how do you feel about it? I'm very curious about my weight but declined to see it at the last appointment because I thought it might set me back.

I feel conflicted. I can't believe how many times in the last couple of hours I've subconsciously gone to weigh myself. I want to be rid of them, I'm sick of the hold they have over me but I do need to lose a bit of weight so at some point im either going to have to measure my body or weigh myself at the gym.

I didn't ever have any kind of eating disorder but I was overweight for a while in my late teens and I was really determined to lose weight but wasn't having much success. I used to weigh myself several times a day, including before and after using the toilet. I was staying at a relative's house at the time and she had bathroom scales. When I moved out I purposely didn't buy scales and it was the most freeing thing. I've never had scales since and I don't miss them.

Thank you for replying! I would love for it to be as freeing as you've described. I'll have to get over this initial hurdle first!

Did you manage to lose the weight without tracking it?

I have scales and am trying to lose weight but I only weigh myself maybe once a month. Any more and it demotivates me and makes me feel like crap.

Do you find it tempting to get on them more often? I need to find a balance with the gym scales, because there's risk I'll just get on them every time I go.

I don’t find it tempting, no. But you need to do what works for you. If weighing yourself controls your life and makes you feel a certain way, then it might be freeing to remove that control.
