New car Kia Sportage or VW Tiguan

We need to replace our existing car fairly quickly so not got time to do tons of research and test drives. Having had a look at what’s in our budget we think we are happy to go with one of these two and we test drove the Kia this weekend.
Does anyone have experience of both cars to give me some intel ? We think the Kia meets our needs but should we drive the Tiguan too , is it better build quality ? I think it’s likely to be a bit more expensive, we have had Golfs in the past and always been happy.
we are looking at the GTline S spec if that relevant. Our priorities are comfort , fit three teens in the back , decent boot, and ideally just a nice smooth comfortable drive with useful tech.
Any positives or drawbacks we need to consider ?
TIA

Kia for sure
Great warranty

There's a Skoda that's basically the Tiguan as well. Can't remember the name but worth a look.

Skoda Kodiaq or Skoda Karoq.

There is a reason why it seems like every 3rd car is a Tiguan. Best car we've ever had. I'd buy another in a heartbeat.

We picked up our new Sportage a couple of weeks ago (same spec as you are looking at) and have been really pleased with it. Can’t comment on the VW but no complaints about the Kia

I'm not happy with German cars these days. Some of them have terrible repair bills and a completely unjustified reputation for reliability.

Sure they are better styling and better trim inside than some of the Far East options.

But the 7 year warranty is increasingly worth having as cars are getting so expensive to fix these days.

I would test drive both but if you can't see much difference from a driver experience I would go for the Kia.

German cars are increasingly becoming enthusiasts cars.

I have a 30 odd thousand mile German car that I am looking at a 2-3k repair bill at the moment due to a faulty gearbox.

I love the car, but the repair bills and the reliability are just horrible.

The Tiguan is the same build as the Seat Ateca which I had and loved , no issues ever. It's a more sporty look and costs less than the Tiguan which looks a bit staid. No experience of the Kia.

I love my Sportage. My new one is a spec 2 GT line but I miss my old basic spec one.

They're great to drive and have good boot space and are roomy in the back. There are two reclining settings for the rear seats as well, that can give you a tiny bit more boot space.

SwedishEdith · 21/07/2025 15:13

We've got a Tiguan but it's not my car so can't really comment on the driving experience or the repair bills. But, I think the boot space isn't that great. So check whether it's enough for what you need.

I’ve got a Sportage that is 15 years old. It has never failed to start and never broken down.

when this workhorse finally dies, I’ll get another Sportage!

HelplessSoul · 21/07/2025 17:10

Fuck all "quality" about any VW, as well as their dogshit reliability.

Sportage is fine, but better options like Lexus NX, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 - or if you can get past how old the design is, the Mazda CX-5.

Dontbugmemalone · 21/07/2025 17:49

I've got a Tiguan and it's the best car I've had.
There's plenty of room in the boot as well as passenger seats, can easily fit 3 adults in the back and still be comfortable.
It's very smooth to drive and responsive.
It's got adaptive cruise control, which really helps on the motorway.
I watched a lot of review videos before I made my decision.

It also helps as a petite woman, I can see over the steering wheel and can adjust to seat to the right height and have a good line of sight.

I've driven a Seat Alteca and wouldn't recommend it but that's just my personal taste with cars.

I don't have experience with Kia so can't comment on that.
Good luck.

Have a look at the Kodiaq too, huge boot with ability to put two seats up to make it a 7-seater, ideal for ferrying around teenagers and their myriad pals. We replaced our Sportage with a Kodiaq and really appreciate the extra flexibility of space.

Such a wealth of information thanks everyone . We are going to do a bit more research but I am encourage by the Sportage owners who are fans !

Kia over VAG shit every single time.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 22/07/2025 21:42

If you're looking at the Sportage also look at Hyundai Tucson. They are very similar but you might get a better deal with the Hyundai.
