If you are basking in the victory of finding something that actually works against flies, what is it?

Cuz we've tried everything the Internet recommends, but the bottom floor of our house is still fly central.

So sick of the little fuckers. We have a clean house. Nothing smells, nothing is rotten etc. The only fresh food out is the fruit bowl, but the fruit would go weird in the fridge. The bin is outside.

So yeah, what's worked for you oh wise women of MN?

Electric tennis racket.

No toxic fly spray dripping down your clean windows and no squashed guts from swatting them.

Actual flies rather than fruit flies? You need a Red Top Fly Catcher in your outside space. Put it downwind though. They are astonishingly effective, especially if you have livestock.

Finish a jar of jam (or honey or marmalade). Don't wash it out. Hammer a nail hole in the lid. Half-fill with water and screw lid back on. Flying things can find their way in but not out.

If fruit flies, we had quite good results with the cider vinegar & washing-up liquid technique, though we had about half a dozen jars rather than just one. But I also think you need a reset of at least a few weeks where you do just keep the fruit in the fridge. We knew where the little fuckers had come from (friend gave us a massive bag of plums) but they took ages to get rid of. But otherwise we don't normally get them, and haven't this year.

Magnetic fly screen is the only thing. You have to stop them getting into the house. You sound like me last summer. I was at my wit’s end. All of our windows have curtains and then another pole with net or voile. If windows are open we have the nets closed. This also prevents them getting into the house, but we have the magnetic screen across our French doors, which are the main entry point downstairs. They snap shut as soon as the kids go in or out. No time for flies to sneak through.

My mam n dad have this weird contraption thing, looks like a lamp, with water in the bottom. The solution attracts the flies and they go in but can’t get out.. she’s had this for say 2 weeks and I kid you not, there is easily 500 flies in that thing. Obviously dead, which I felt a bit sad about.. but it really works! Not suitable for indoor use, my dad had it in his shed but he said it smelled funny so they put it just outside. If you hang it at the back door it should stop them..

Half a lemon studded with cloves has been working for us. I have several dotted around and change them weekly

The latest "trend" I've seen on TikTok, but not tried yet, is to cut a lemon in half and stud the cut edges with cloves. I've added both to my next shopping list, to give it a try.

We've resorted to getting an electric zapper, which does work. You can tell the size of the fly by the loudness of the "crack". It does zap those horrible little ones that accumulate around the fruit bowl.

Load of crap, tried it and it seemed to draw the buggers in.

Ive bought those fly catchers that you put a sachet of powder and top up with water and put it on my window sill where most of the flies were coming in, and that’s helped. They’re going in there instead of through my window. Got them off Amazon.
