Gas barbecue recommendations

Thinking of getting a gas barbecue - we've had a series of charcoal ones over the years and frankly they're a faff, as is cleaning them. So, looking for your recommendations please with ease of cleaning also in mind. There's only two of us regularly so we don't need anything big although I do like doing veg as well as meat on a barbecue.

Thank you @RantzNotBantz - do you have one? I was more thinking of one on a stand, but will take a look.

I’d consider the Ninja electric one too. It’s fantastic and very well reviewed.

Now that's put the cat amongst the pigeons - hadn't even thought of electric!

I have the charcoal version. I love Weber BBQs because they are indestructible and won't rust - and the ones on a stand are so much kore expensive. These would tuck into your shed when not in use or in winter if space is an issue.

Also could be stood on a sturdy metal table, for example.

I guess it's a budget compact version, which may not meet your needs.

Does the gas canister go inside it somewhere? As opposed to needing the huge refillable cylinders?

No, it doesn't go inside. Any gas BBQ will need a gas bottle, but they don't have to be huge., e.g Campingaz 904 or 907

And Calor Gas do 5Kg and 6Kg bottles.

You just need to make sure that you get the right regulator for the gas - i.e the regulator pertains to the gas bottle, not the BBQ. Whatever BBQ or gas you choose - if you go with gas.

Thank you for the extra info. I did wonder about rusting - that's been our biggest issue, even with covers as a damp atmosphere will cause rusting. Our next door neighbours have a gas Weber which they don't even cover and it looks brand new after several years.

I do like the look of the Ninja woodfire models. Does anyone know whether you can use other brands of wood pellets/chips for adding flavour when barbecuing?

Thank you, I just popped into the local garden centre in my lunch hour and looked at this one, it does use the disposable type canisters (they screw on) rather than the big bottles, it does look good and is very light.

Yes you can, although we’ve found the Ninja ones really good. We also have their electric pizza oven which is equally brilliant. Barbecue is very low-hassle and great result every time, with none of the hassle of gas canisters or charcoal. I am def a convert!

Thanks @MellowPinkDeer - that does everything! Bit more than I was thinking of spending, but more features/options to consider.

Oh yes! Duh to self.. it actually says disposable gas in the description.

My BIL runs his off a small gas bottle, which would work out cheaper if you were BBQing all the time

Makingpeace · 21/07/2025 16:51

Weber!

Yes they weren't cheap so it's good to know you could use a big bottle, we have one of those bigger CampingGaz refillable ones somewhere for our camping stove. This could solve my DH birthday present problem.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 27/07/2025 14:31

Just coming back to ask if anyone has an electric barbecue and how you find it?

The Ninjas can't be used indoors at all, which I think is down to the smoke box feature. Not a deal breaker, but I think I need to find the manuals for Weber electric ones as their website isn't as informative. There are a couple of other brands too.
