School gave me uniform how do I brighten them up.

Upandover24 · 20/07/2025 12:53

Ds school gave me some school uniform. But the white tops are not white and the red jumpers are faded. Is there anyway I can make the red tops red again /not faded and the white tops white .

Apparently a cup of white vinegar in the fabric conditioner drawer brightens up whites, although I haven’t tried it myself. I don’t know what you can do about the jumper other than re dying it? With a Dylon kit or similar

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/07/2025 13:03

White Glo from Home Bargains will brighten up the shirts.

Secretsquirels · 20/07/2025 13:06

I’d add to this don’t worry.

Our school uniforms are red and white and within about 3 weeks after the start of term they all look like this.

As does every child who has an older sibling, plus a lot who get uniform from friends.

It depends what they are made of. If 100% cotton, then the whites can be washed very hot, with a bit of bleach and dried in the sun, or use the White Glo. But polyester is going to be more difficult to deal with.
You could try Dylon for the red - the usual one you do in the washing machine is designed for cottons, but I think there are ones you can get for polyester.

Newyeargymwanker · 20/07/2025 13:13

I can second the pp, it takes no time at all for the kids too look well washed. I pick up as much as I can from the second hand sale, as do all the other mums in my school.
And my youngest children have never had new uniform. It’s just not something I want to spend money on.

Clean is all it needs to be, and then you can celebrate when they come home wearing all the colours of their latest painting rather than crying about the money wasted on new jumpers.

I agree but its just feels fresher even if only for a short while 😅

Just buy new. White shirts or polo tops cost £3.50 in Asda.

Better to recycle for the environment and the pocket, but you won't save much if you start dyeing and hot washing with loads of washing additives @Upandover24. I get your point but clean and correct uniform is all they need.

Don't do this if you already have uniform
Those new clothes will look exactly the same as second hand ones before half term.

viques · 20/07/2025 13:53

Concentrate on the shirts, if they look clean no one will notice the jumpers.

Fearfulsaints · 20/07/2025 13:54

I have done vinegar and drying in the hot sun. Really helped. I actually discovered that hot washes hasten they grey and washing cooler has prolonged mine. Maybe its the Teflon they put in school polo's. They don't act like normal white cotton.

I have no idea for the red. I did dylon clothes once and it went well but all the stitching didn't dye, but I guess if its already red that's not an issue? I'd be nervous about the school logo changing colours. It also wasnt free.

BeCalmNavyDreamer · 20/07/2025 13:59

I wouldn't bother. Keep clean and really well ironed and they'll still look smart.

Not suggesting you wouldn't do this anyway but it's less faff than buying anything new.

Don't you think there might be a reason the schools given her uniform clothes?

By time you buy a one to wear, one as a spare and one in the wash it starts to add up if you are watching your budget.

If there is an easy way to freshen them up, then fabulous!

Sunlight gets the best results for whites. Honestly leave them hanging on the line a few days (Watch out for spider willy's when they get darked on!).

Dylon isn't the cheapest option unfortunately, but as you only need to brighten the red a sachet of the hand dye would be enough to do a few items.

Good luck op! Just think you are doing your bit for the environment!

LIZS · 20/07/2025 14:06

Wash white tops on a sunny day and leave out on line in full sun.

minnienono · 20/07/2025 14:20

Try soaking whites in a mix of thin bleach and water (the cheap stuff in a big container, 35p last time i bought some) unfortunately the jumper will cost you more to get it brighter than buying a new one, i would either just use as is or perhaps see if you can buy one new from Aldi for the first day then keep until photo day. My dc only had one jumper (well cardigan) each per size required and passed them down however the school logo tops didn’t loose colour - I passed them onto use by other families too! One decent one is enough, look and see if there’s anyone eg local charities who could help you buy one branded one. As for polos, they are also cheap in supermarkets but the bleach should help for less money

MeganM3 · 20/07/2025 14:30

Please don’t worry about it. They wont stand out as having a faded uniform, all kids with older siblings will be the same right away and everyone else within a month of so. Half my kids class lose all their jumpers before Xmas and there’s an enormous pile of unnamed lost property that everyone scavenges through on the last day of term. I started with 5 jumpers and ended up with 1 jumper and someone else’s cardigan.

In your shoes I would probably try and get my hands on a couple of new polos, then with all the second hand ones pop them out in the sunshine for a whole day if it’s sunny, the sun does a great job of bleaching.

Red… dying might be more trouble than it’s worth. I wouldn’t bother.

You need some sodium percarbonate. You can buy it online. It's a green bleach so does not kill the fishes etc.
Dissolve a couple of tablespoons in hot water (it needs heat to activate it) and add to a bowl of cooler water. Soak overnight and they'll be good as new.
Also, longer slower cold washing cleans clothes without the colours fading or running onto each other.

Edited

I can afford uniform. Money is a little tight but not to the point of not affording school uniform. But also if it saves me a bit of money them all good.

Yes also if you have more than one child it all adds up . Plus new shoes.

😅 ah yes the spider willy's and darked on I will be super careful.

I have never tried to dye clothes before I wasn't sure if there may be a cheaper make i haven't even looked. I need to do around 10 jumpers. Could I mess it up and they end patchy?

Smartness, pride in appearance and fitting in with their peers also matters.

I think it will be fine. Im thinking the red jumpers are probably not as bad as I thought. And I can brighten up the white shirts

I’d soak the whites in Napisan or Milton and then hot wash them. They’ll come up well. Dry in bright sunlight if you can. This always kept my son’s polos lovely and white. Dylon do a colour liquid that revives coloured clothes. It’s a bit more expensive than most (although I’ve seen it in home bargains for around a fiver). Worth trying that.

Yes! I haven’t used it but my friend did and was very impressed! Worth a shot I’d say.
