Advice about fleas

Please can somebody advise me on how I can get prescription strength flea treatment without seeing a vet?
My sisters cats are completely flea ridden and we seem to have brought them back into our own home after unknowingly petting the cats and visiting her home. I didnt realise they had fleas until I saw one on my arm whilst sat onher sofa, I then noticed how much the cats were scratching themselves.
Now my youngest has woken up with red bumps on a few places and my eldest also has some on his leg.
I've bought some indorex and put everything on a hot wash but my sister says she treats her cats with frontline but it doesnt work anymore.
I dont have any money to give her or I absolutely would and she visits a food bank just to get by so I know she cant afford a vet trip for 3 cats.

Before anyone says she shouldn't have pets if she can't afford them..I know! I've said this myself but she feeds the strays of which there are many in the area that she lives in and they all come and go from her home but her three are ones that ended up staying with her, 2 of them abandoned by her neighbour when they moved.
She literally spends money feeding these cats ans then has no money to buy food for herself so I know if she could then she would take them.

Is there anywhere I can get them without needing a prescription?

Do other countries do these flea treatments without needing a prescription? Asking as I have family in Italy and Spain who are due to visit us soon, could they bring some to us? Would it be allowed?

I use Advantage for my dog. Get it from pets at home or online.

Frontline stopped working years ago.
You won’t need stuff brought in from other countries.

I'm just back from a holiday in France and pharmacies seem to sell some pet products too.
Does she qualify for treatment from Blue Cross? They offer cheaper flea treatment for peoples pets who are in receipt of certain benefits.

Go check out and ask in a pet store. That’s what I did when my very young kitten arrived with fleas. Also you could wash them with dish soap and use a nit comb.

Beamur · 19/07/2025 10:01

Flea combing isn't a bad idea if the cats will tolerate it.

Treat your carpets too. We moved- few years ago- and the previous owners pets fleas were in the carpet. We bought a flea powder.

Can your sister get flea collars?

OverlyFragrant · 19/07/2025 10:04

Petdrugsonline do some good treatments

Lalosmoustache · 19/07/2025 10:09

The ones in pets at home apparently dont work, ive done a but of googling and apparently none of the over the counter ones work anymore.
They do have flea collars but they also must not be working.
Do you think the strays cats are bringing in the fleas to her cats?
I've just tried to order from petsdrugs online and it said to attach a prescription which obviously i dont have.
For one cat it would cost around £70 just to see a vet and get a prescription given to her then she'd have to buy the medication. I cant afford to give her that money as im struggling myself.
Does anyone have any experience of something working that need a vet visit?

Advantage mighy be ok. It has the same flea treating ingredient as Advocate which is prescription only (advocate has a wormer in it too). You can buy it in pets at home

Beamur · 19/07/2025 10:16

If the pet cats are mixing with the strays they will pick up fleas, if they go out at all frankly they're likely to pick up fleas.
There's no cheap fix. The treatments sold in shops and online are much less effective. Even vets have to switch around what they prescribe as fleas become resistant.

Myfridgeiscool · 19/07/2025 10:18

I’ve been using Advantage for years, was recommended by a friend who’s a vet nurse.
It’s £15 for 4 lots.

Does sit definitely still work?

I can probably afford a pack of that for her.
I've told her to stop the stray cats mixing with hrrs but u doubt she will.

Think it depends on the area you live as to whether its effective on the fleas there. Can't hurt to try if she can't afford vet strength treatment

Lalosmoustache · 19/07/2025 13:44

I've ordered the advantage I hope to God it works as I love my sister but I wont be going round until they're flea free.. ive spotted a flea in my house today!
How bad must the infestation be at her house if we've managed to bring some home with us? 🤢
