I've posted in chat as ive noticed it gets more traffic.
My circumstances have recently changed and I have inherited £20k from an Aunt. i am a not in employment as im a full-time carer for my terminally ill parent and i am a single parent with 2 dc, one at school, and one just about to start college in September.
Due to this inheritance my UC has completely stopped so we are living off the £20k plus carers allowance and child benefit. what i want to know is In September will i be able to claim free school meals for my youngest dc due to having no income other than the carers allowance? I have looked on online and I cannot find any information on if savings affect free school meals it only mentions low income below £16k and qualifying benefits.
Due to my current caring circumstances im unable to work right now. How do I find more information?

I don’t think carers allowance is on the list of benefits that make you eligible

  • Eligibility Criteria:
  • Free school meals are generally available to those receiving certain benefits like Universal Credit (with income restrictions), Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or those under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Does your parent claim Attendance Allowance? If not, would they consider applying and letting you use the money?

I wonder why as it isn't much money for what we do, only £333 per month it was also deducted from my UC aswell when I qualified for that. Carers are also limited in how much they can earn in employment if they are able to be in employment which many carers are not. My total monthly income with the carers and child benefit combined is just over £500 per month. plus theres obviously the £20k inheritance which will be classed as "savings". packed lunches it'll have to be then.

Yes they do actually. ive never considered that. I'd feel awful asking and it may cause issues with my siblings thinking im getting money they are not from them. Tbh though my 2 siblings live miles away and do nothing for our parent not even a phone call we havent seen either of them in person since a quick visit at Christmas. I live close by so it has all fallen on me to be our parents carer. parent has been though a really tough time with palliative cancer treatment with no support from either of them.
