Considering getting a discreet body worn camera to record the behaviour of some men; any thoughts?

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 18/07/2025 15:58

This idea was inspired by another thread in which a woman was out walking and was followed by a man behaving strangely. One of the replies suggested getting a body worn camera and provided a link. I followed that link and am seriously considering getting one myself and attaching it to the strap of my backpack.

I am so tired of the behaviour of some men. When I try to explain some aspects of their behaviour to my partner, he just doesn't understand. Not surprising, as he's a man, and isn't subject to the same harassment as women are.

The staring and leering. The crotch grabbing. The times when you have the feeling they're filming or taking photos. It sounds almost unbelievable when written down, more so because of my age (not that age protects women from harassment and abuse). I thought by 55 I'd be free of this. Instead it's almost worse. The rude behaviour of certain male shopkeepers that you're pretty sure is because you're female. Oh, and the recent flasher. Happened so quickly it barely registered. Reported it to the police of course. Keep thinking that if I'd had the body camera then, the incident would have been caught on camera.

Also having thoughts of then uploading these incidents somewhere to show what women have to put up with.

I'm curious to see what is caught by such a camera. Thinking about it, I think that all women should be issued one free of charge!

Does anyone own/wear such a device at the moment and have you found it useful?

You want a discreet camera to record men you suspect are discreetly recording you?

Can't you see the contradiction?

Can't you see the difference?

LauraNorda · 18/07/2025 18:13

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 18/07/2025 17:51

@LauraNorda - I mentioned the men who record as an example of their behaviour towards women. It is the other behaviours mentioned that are more concerning to me. It is not a contradiction if I am recording for the purpose of safety - on the off chance their behaviour escalates.

Maybe the men are recording for their own safety. It's not as though a woman has never falsely accused a man of unwanted sexual touching, for example.

Women get a free pass to do as they like? Is that what you mean?

What? Do we? I didn't get this memo.

My thoughts exactly. I've been merrily going outside alone for more years than I care to count.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 18/07/2025 18:15

@LauraNorda - Not when they're recording the backside of the women in front of them in the coffee queue! Or lift their camera up quite blatantly when a woman in a low cut top/ sheer top is walking towards them! For their own safety, my arse! 😂

Obviously not. Men hurt women more than the other way around. Some men film women for their gratification. Women film men for their safety.

Goldenbear · 18/07/2025 18:18

Data protection laws do apply on public spaces if depends on the motivation for filming whether it is legal to do so or not.

Women would LOVE to be able to do what they like, or at least, the freedom from fear and intimidation to do what men do - but because of the behaviour of certain me, they don't. Which is why women start to think like this in the first place.

Never mind a "free pass" - they don't even have true freedom a lot of the time!

In not "on" and it not "if".

Yep, I thought this too. The way he desperately wants to have the last word gives him away. 😂

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 18/07/2025 18:29

@PluckyChancer - it's always pretty obvious, isn't it? The classic "women are paranoid", etc. If women are considering standing up for themselves, increasing their safety - we can't have that!! Let's minimise their concerns! 🙄

What on Earth are those little cartoons for? Can't you express yourself in words? I can see you glitching from here and before you ask, I am not recording you.

Exactly. I can't imagine a world where women would want to record men for their own gratification. Christ alive. Personally I see enough of them and their shit behaviour in real life.

You cannot use a hidden/spy camera in a public place legally unless you inform anyone around you that you’re doing so. You could get in a lot of trouble.

if you walk around carrying an obvious camera such as a go pro the rules may be different.

this is part of the reason women always take someone with them. It sucks I know.

Edited

Pretty sure you can in public. Just as you can take video and photos with your phone in public. Or with a camera for that matter. You can conceal your phone whilst doing it.

PunishmentRoundupWithJoon · 18/07/2025 18:41

@ginasevern - That is EXACTLY it. There is such a huge difference in motivation. Most sensible people would understand the difference.

It's strange when you consider all the ways cameras are used for security now, but somehow it's considered by some to be odd that a woman would want to use one for her own safety.

Man here. No objection to being filmed in public by a woman. But then,I'm not a sleazy perve. It would be extremely dull footage.

cakeorwine · 18/07/2025 18:50

As a slight aside, it worries me what it says about society when so many retail staff are now wearing body cams at work - presumably because of customer behaviour?

Using words and not doodles, how will a camera keep you 'safe'? How will it stop the 0.1% of men you say are recording you on the sly?

Check out the link below for discreet recording devices. You'll get an hour or two of shaky, unuseable footage, at best, before the battery gives up.

@cakeorwine - I've noticed that too. It is quite depressing.
