Opinions on Ear Piercing For Babies/Toddlers?

Just seen a photo on Facebook of an ex colleague’s child who I don’t think is even 2 & she has pierced ears. I just think it’s so wrong. In really little babies it’s even worse! At least wait until the child is old enough to choose & even then, that’s really too soon. I first had mine done at 16 & they soon healed over as I couldn’t be bothered to do what you’re supposed to do properly.

I'm not a fan. Personally I would allow DC to get pierced once they're secondary school age, but that will be if they activities choose, not something I'd suggest or encourage.

With a little kid, the didn't choose it or have any understanding of what they were agreeing to if they were asked.

MaryGreenhill · 17/07/2025 15:08

I don't think it's fair on the child to do that before they can give their consent or want it done .

DiscoBob · 17/07/2025 15:10

It's just unnecessary. What if the earrings get caught? The kid could get needless injuries. Jewellery on babies is a choking hazard. And obviously they don't appreciate it and the piercing itself does hurt. And could get infected.

I would never pierce my child unless they were old enough to request it multiple times and they were responsible enough to keep the piercings clean and hygienic.

I dont know why you would poke a hole in a baby, sorry

I get it when you're old enough to want to wear earrings for your own aesthetic but until you are old enough to look after them (I was 10 and begged and begged then did look after them) then clip ons will surely suffice for a kid who wants to play dress up

For babies it's painful and probably annoying. Not to mention pointless as they dont understand what earrings are.

It wouldn’t be for me although I have gypsy heritage and it’s very popular amongst that culture.
I made my girls wait until I knew they could safely remove them for sport without help. They were both about 8.

Holijays · 17/07/2025 23:18

No no and no

NuffSaidSam · 17/07/2025 23:21

It's awful. Marks the parents out as being problematic imo.

I think it is dying a death, thankfully. Just not quite quick enough!

TheCurious0range · 17/07/2025 23:22

I'm not sure why it's still legal, to punch holes in children for decorative purposes. I had mine done at 14 when I asked, my mum's position was I was old enough to take care of them myself, I got them done at the beginning of the summer holidays so they were healed before I went back as we weren't allowed to wear jewellery at school. I wouldn't be averse to an over 16 or 18 policy for all piercings

Whatwouldnanado · 17/07/2025 23:24

Grim. Save it as something for high school when they are old enough to take care of the piercings. (And actually choose to have them in the first place!)

StarDolphins · 17/07/2025 23:27

I don’t like this. My mum did it to me. I will never forget being in Claire’s and seeing a tiny baby sat in the chair having its ears pierced and felt so sad for the poor little thing.

I’ve told my DD she can have it done in secondary school.

gloriahallelujah · 17/07/2025 23:27

It’s vile and purely for the parents vanity. Pain, choking hazard, infection risk all to look ‘cute’ - which it doesn’t by the way. It looks crass and ridiculous on small children/babies.

I really think it should be illegal until the child is at least able to verbalise their wishes about their own body.

Appleandcinnamoncrumble · 17/07/2025 23:31

In some cultures it is what people do. I know about Spain for instance, and I know someone in Costa Rica whose newborn baby’s ears were pierced in hospital by the midwife. Apparently that’s what they do.

OrangeAndPistachio · 17/07/2025 23:33

I think two is far too young. My daughter was 8 when she had her ears pierced. She asked for pierced ears , she was able to understand that it would hurt and that she would have to allow me to clean the piercings daily. If a child cannot understand these things no piercing should happen. It's cruel.

SeaDragon17 · 17/07/2025 23:35

There are obviously many things we decide for our kids but aesthetic mutilation shouldn’t be one of them.

Doesn't make it ok though.

No

Ketzele · 17/07/2025 23:45

I can't get worked up about this. However, my dds waited till secondary school.

Shoemadlady · 17/07/2025 23:48

I don’t think any adult should inflict that pain on a child if they’re not old enough to make their own choice. It’s vile

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/07/2025 23:53

Can't stand it, why would you voluntarily hurt your baby just to make it look prettier . What message does that send to a female child.

However i feel like ifs seen as racist to have that opinion as it's offend Asian or black families

GonnaeNoDaeThatJustGonnaeNo · 17/07/2025 23:53

It should be illegal

Mumblechum0 · 17/07/2025 23:54

Chavvy

angelco · 17/07/2025 23:55

I made the decision to wait until my daughter could ask for it. She’s 3 now and we went somewhere just before she was 3 with a relative that had them and she asked but since has forgotten. I want her to be prepared and understand it may hurt for a short time and be able to communicate. I didn’t want to put her through it for the purpose of just looking cute as a baby.
