Unexpectedly brilliant purchases

Parata · 16/07/2025 19:49

Last year there was a thread where people were recommending purchases they made or gifts they got that were unexpectedly brilliant. I got sleep headphones based off that thread for my birthday, and they have honestly been amazing - have helped me sleep better as I no longer turn to my phone and doom scroll when I wake up, but just put on a podcast or a meditation session and drift off to sleep. (Also got an acupressure mat that has been much less useful).

As my birthday and that of my kids, and as well Christmas approaches, I was hoping it is time to make a new similar thread maybe we could all find the next thing that changes our lives.

Nothing to add to the thread other than to say my Amazon basket has never been so full since reading this thread 🤦‍♀️

I have thought about this but onions make me cry so badly I would probably manage to grate my own finger because I couldn’t see properly!
Also it just seems a lot of effort. I have order the manual chopper now so will see if that helps

It’s not too bad in the effort front but yes, the crying can be intense depending on the onion. It just makes my son feel guilty lol.

Is there any device (s) you can use to cook more than 1item in air fryer eg 2 medium pizzas stacked but with something in between so they don't stick together?

I have these

yes check the internal measurements of your air fryer, tap "air fryer triple rack" into Amazon and find one that fits.

Double layer racks were supplied with my taller Ninja (the circular pressure cooker type which would take a small pizza) and you can also get simple racks for the double drawer ones from them, but the surface area is small . I have the outdoor one too which is tall enough to take a rack and large enough for a decent sized pizza. I'm guessing that other brands do them, and there are racks of various sizes on sale on Amazon.

I'm loving this thread and thought of another one - Dreamfarm pizza scissors. So much quicker and more satisfying to use than a pizza wheel, and it doesn't wreck whatever surface is underneath the pizza.

@peanutbcolada I love the look of the kenwood mini processor. Does grated eg carrot come out like it's been julienned or like normal grated things? I've been looking forever for a satisfactory & easy way to make fine julienned veg.

Ordinary kitchen scissors are what I use, rather than buy something specific to slice pizza. Easy.

ReadingTime · 26/07/2025 16:40

@cramptramp these are very satisfying to use on pizza though because of the way they're angled, and the way the flat bit under the bottom blade keeps the pizza in place. Definitely not a necessity in life, but very pleasing nonetheless! I hate an overcrowded utensil drawer but the pizza scissors earn their place.

This silicone supoon. Better than any other silicon spatula I’ve had. You can get every last bit out of a jar or pot and it’s very satisfying to use. I have the larger one which I also like but the mini really is an essential

Oh thank you, I’ve been looking for one of these for ages!

I bought this about 3 weeks ago in a attempt to grow some spuds , I am a hopeless gardener but I thought I'd give it a go .

The package is incredibly light, only a few ounces and about 10x10x2 inchs so its ideal for storing in small places until your ready to use it.
Then you just open its bag and add about 2 lts of warm water and let it sit for a bit. It makes upto 10lts of compost , which so far my spuds seem to like .

I took a chance on this weird trampoline scooter for my son which is basically a scooter with a soft foam bottom and no wheel for practicing tricks on a trampoline before trying them in. Skate park. He loves it- been on the trampoline with it about 3 hours a day. Haven’t argued about screens for a month!

TiddlesUpATree · 27/07/2025 11:25

Love this thread. Amazon basket is bursting at the seams. These are mine.

Great headphones. I have some apple ones but they keep falling out. Also tried the bone conducting ones but they squeeze my head 🤣. These are great. They gently grip your ear so won't fall out. Sound is fab and you can still hear traffic if you are out with them on. Also super cheap. Bought for my teen and he loves them.

Barbadossunset · 27/07/2025 13:17

This is ingredients rather than objects, but when cooking anything coated in breadcrumbs, I find the panko ones make things crispier.

limetrees32 · 27/07/2025 14:15

@TiddlesUpATree are those buds easy to pause ?
I have v similar ,different make ,and they are super easy to silence ,just one squeeze type action .
Some seem to want you to do a tap ,and it ends up altering the volume but not pausing .
I want to buy some for a friend and these look like a better make ,but want to be sure of ease of operation .

limetrees32 · 27/07/2025 14:20

Ah,actually I've just read the reviews and it sounds more like a tapping function .Mine must be more easily described as a button ,tho no visible button .
And in case it helps anyone ,being in an area where I'm not prescribed blue tooth hearing aids (grr ) these type of buds sit very neatly on top/over my hearing aids .

@angela1952 yes I had the oxo one for a while but using it always felt like a wrestling match where the carrot kept trying to escape and I was in danger of losing a chunk of finger. Then one of the teeth got bent, and I got fed up of being stabbed by it in the drawer, so I got rid of it. On the other hand the normal oxo peeler in the same design is perfect.

I use a scary mandolin at the moment for coleslaw, it does a perfect job of the cabbage and onion but the carrot strips are a bit too big and tough. While graters just make them mushy.

I used to use a round French style one with a handle in the top to turn, which was excellent at first, but gradually got blunt and rusty and I’ve never found a good replacement.

@ReadingTime was the French mandolin something similar to that one there?

An OXO good grips one comes up as a suggestion on the same page which does julienne strips, has anybody used this?

I do and don’t like it.
I found d it tricky to use, even with things like cabbage. It’s sat at te bottom of the drawer.

A seam ripper/unpicker with a bobble on the short end. Makes unpicking seams 10 times faster and stops tears. My previous ones didn’t have the bobble and I had to unpick seams stitch by stitch. My new hobby is dressmaking, that I am totally useless at and requires me to sew and unpick every item I make at least three times.

If you get this Superdrug dermaplaning tool you can rip a seam in minutes. Simply place it between the two layers of fabric and rub against the stitches. Try it on scrap fabric first

@MoveOverToTheSea No it was more like this style. It was from a fancy cookware shop in Bath that has since closed down. I think this ebay one might have been the one my mum had when I was little. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/126744956687?_ul=GB&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5338990947&toolid=10001&customid=eb%3Ag%3Avms%3Aeb%3Ap%3A126744956687%3B

Oh god. I remember those!!
Tbf mainly to make soup and mashed potatoes.

I do so miss that shop, the best one I’ve ever been in, such a shame it closed.

@DeanStockwelllSpuds won’t grow in that compost. They need proper compost/rich dirt
