Worried about a friend

I’m starting to get worried about a good friend of mine who I love dearly. I don’t know much about drugs, having only tried them a couple of times in my life. People around me generally don’t take them either. This friend micro doses mushrooms everyday for depression and does a big trip maybe once every two months. This I’m less concerned about. However, she does mdma a couple of times a month. Usually up to 3 doses at once, I’ve seen her. She has been doing this for a few years. She seems to function well, holds down her job, exercises, socialises, eats well ect However, I know she suffers badly with depression which I don’t think mdma helps with given the depletion of serotonin. I’ve noticed a couple of things I’m concerned about and think they may be linked to her using mdma. These are involuntary neck and jaw movements, slightly spastic speech occasionally, involuntary muscle twitching. She can also appear quite flat emotionally, not a warm gushy person at all which is fine, but it’s more than that. Sometimes her memory isn’t great. I’ve tried to gently talk to her about her use (not mentioned the symptoms) but she insists the drugs help her and make her happy. I’m worried about her, does anyone know if the symptoms could be linked? Does she sound like she has a problem or is just using them to have fun in a non-harmful way? Any advice would really be appreciated as I’m worried.

@Lm4065 I can’t help, but I hope you meant ‘spasmodic’ rather than the offensive ’spastic’ speech.

Spastic speech is also a medical term, if you Google it it will explain what it is...

At work we don’t use that term anymore, I didn’t realise people still do though.

Please ignore people wanting to censor your language.
Your query is more important than semantics.
It does sound like she has a problem - and you are absolutely right about serotonin depletion. However, she is unlikely to want to seek help unless she feels she has a problem (like most addictions). Does she have children? The only reason I ask is that she could be considered a danger to them. However, she is unlikely to be considered a danger to herself as these are her life choices.

Hi
thanks for your response. No she doesn’t have kids.
does anyone have any advice on how I can try to get through to her? I want to help and support her.

Spasticity and in this case spastic speech is absolutely a medical phenomenon @ReneesBigMole . Better to inform yourself rather than guessing. Spasmodic is rather different.

Is it to do with drugs? Or can it have another cause?

@HappyHLAs I said, we still don’t use this term at work anymore.

I would be concerned she might have a condition called tardive dyskinesia. Some drugs can cause this. She may need urgent medical attention

Suggest 5-htp instead of mdma and trials it for at least six months.

Does she drive? You could perhaps address the problem from the angle of personal responsibility.
It could be dangerous for her and for others.
