Family wants another dog

We already have an 8 year old pug who prefers staying at home/ having his dog door to the garden in the day now (I know that sounds mental 😂) He also loves big dogs at the park. Also have a 19 year old cat.

Husband and I can bring into our office (we also have an enclosed large yard on site), our oldest son works for us and is out from 5am and gets in around 12pm in the case we can't.

Other son is at college 3 days a week and indoors the other two days.

Husband wants a Rottweiler.

I had a mastiff growing up and I LOVED him but I am not sure on such a big dog. My pug will love it as he is so happy whenever anyone visits with a dog and plays for hours.

Have applied for rescues but being a big dog breed they only have older ones and none that are able to live with cats/ other dogs.

Does anyone have any large breed recommendations that are happy in the garden/ office/ couple of hours walk after work/ fishing trips at the weekend/ good with other animals?

A retired greyhound if you find one that has been socialised around cats (my sister had one and the cat was in charge and bossed the greyhound around). They are generally pretty chill and love sleeping on the sofa for much of the day, would be happy with short walks and the odd bit of proper zooming time in a secure area, can build up stamina for longer walks.

what about a staffy? they are lovely gentle dogs that are just love bugs and house hippos. you will find loads in rescues but they are super dogs.
saying that I have seen lots of Rotties which are lovely dogs but on the other hand I have seen ones which were terrible in fact nearly killed a labrador and had to be put to sleep.

I’d be interested to know more why the family wants another dog, why especially the DH mentioned a Rottie and re the large dog recommendations you’re after, are these in the same vein of guard type dogs or just any large dog?

Its difficult to advise without that info I think.

Everyone in the house just enjoys having dogs I think. We have the money, time and space for another one.

He had two family rottweilers when he was little and likes their eyebrows 🙄, I however feel they may need quite a bit of care hence I am not rushing out to find a Rottweiler based on his want for one 😅

Doesn't need to be a guard breed, just something he and the teenagers can mess about with that's a bit lumpy that won't get squished.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog would fit the bill.

Aside from being a very rare breed and difficult to get hold of.

Giant breed, a heck of a lot larger than a Rottie. Beautiful dogs but very large.

If you're willing to rescue and open minded about breed I'd contact a rescue and ask who they have who can live with cats/other dogs etc and go from there. It's more important to match on personality than breed anyway.

LittlleMy · 16/07/2025 13:55

@ThatKeenJadeLeader well if it were me, I’d want a Bernese Mountain dog and they have that ‘eyebrow thing’ your nostalgic DH is after! 😅. And in a way they do look a bit like a hairy Rottie! Supposed to be excellent family dogs, calm, affectionate, protective - jury’s out on how good they are with cats so I think that’s not a given it’s more down to correct socialisation.

And have you seen them as puppies?! Good lord! My heart belongs to Border Collies but I will fight anyone that says the BM dog aren’t the cutest puppies! 😁

They’re fucking huge, and can be seriously stubborn. I’d have one!

what breed is the current dog, is a puppy going to piss him off? Having one at home is a bit different to meeting one in the park for 10 mins.

who will the looking after fall to? The boys will be thinking of moving out in the not too distant future.

Defo won't piss him off. He gets depressed when we have people over with dogs and they leave for a couple of days.

He's a pug. Looking after will fall to me and husband as the last two animals have 😂. Kids wanted them, but obviously we know full responsibility lands on us so while the kids walk and play with him (and the cat), he is basically mine and my husbands. As this one will be. Basically mine as the two of them follow me everywhere anyway. Might as well have had two more kids.

I have just had a look, they are very sweet!

I have put us down on many lists. I'll give it another month or so before looking for a puppy.

You can get Staffies with the coat colour of a Rottie. Big enough but not big. Can be left a bit but absolutely love people.

FrogFrogFrog · 16/07/2025 14:19

I'd be a little worried about your 19 year old cat. Our cat was elderly when we got a dog, and it stressed out our poor old cat no end. I wish now we'd waited.

Starlight1984 · 16/07/2025 14:20

We have an Irish Wolfhound who is completely placid and chilled. We both take him to work with us on occasion and he will just sleep all day!
