Diabetic and I struggle to eat

Hi. Name change but I've been on here for many many years. I'm posting this here as there doesn't seem to be a topic for diabetes. Sorry for the long post.

I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes about 2 months ago, and have been on Metformin and Gliclazide (The G only for a month), for 2 weeks now. Normal blood sugar level is 6 - mine was 12. So I'm on the G to lower my blood sugar as quickly as possible. I am also obese, but not due to over eating (although I have managed to lose 2 stone recently by using meal replacement shakes 3 years out of date lol - they mean I don't have to eat).

Now the problem. I don't have an appetite - I never have had. I don't particularly enjoy eating and can happily go 3-4 days without eating. I simply forget to eat as I don't get hungry. I'm 54 and have always been this way. Prior to my diagnosis I was eating one small meal a day (and by small I mean 2 slices of toast, and only because my son reminded me to eat every day lol). Apparently the Metformin also reduces appetite, which makes it even worse.

Now I HAVE to eat to take my meds. I literally have to force myself to eat twice a day, and I'm finding it extremely difficult. And it's also not just 2 slices of toast kind of eating - I have to have loads of protein and fibre. I can't really afford to eat like that, as we live under the breadline and I use the foodbank to feed the kids.

So I've been having half a pot of cottage cheese, with some nuts and chia seeds on oatcakes, or a smoothie made with greek yoghurt, almond milk, frozen berries, kale/spinach, protein powder and chia/flax seeds. Or a tin of tuna/chicken breast with tom sauce and mayo. I can't stand fish fish or eggs. I realise what I'm eating will become boring (I also have ADHD).

I have applied for the 'Pathway to Remission' or 'Soups and Shakes' on the NHS, where I only have to drink a shake 3 times a day (absolutely ideal), but they won't approve me 'till I get my blood sugar down drastically. Booked in for another blood test next month.

So I guess, apart from just blowing off steam, what I'm asking is if there are any diabetics out there who can give me some tips. I'm really struggling here.

Be careful. Diabetes.co.uk is not a legitimate website, it is a company set up to sell low carb diets.
Diabetes UK (.org) address is legit charity that advocates for all types of diabetes
