Weight loss injection question.

Hi all, I’m looking for some advice. Have also posted this in the weight loss topic, but worried it doesn’t have any traffic, so if this isn’t allowed, then please delete (mn HQ), and sorry for the duplicate post.

I’m a long term mumsnetter and I’ve set up this username specifically to ask this, as I don’t want to connect it with any of my other posts.
I’ve been on Wegovy, prescribed by my regular GP since February. I was up to the 1.7 dose, as I had a couple of weeks off at one point due to other things going on so didn’t increase at that point, then stayed on 1.0 for a couple of weeks as that seemed to still be working, then moved up to 1.7. I think other people might have been on a higher dose by this point than I was. Then suddenly, my weight loss plateaued, and I didn’t feel like it was having the same effect, so my GP agreed to move me onto Mounjaro. It’s twice the cost where I am so I didn’t take the decision lightly.
My GP said that as I’d been on 1.7 of Wegovy, he didn’t see the point in me starting on 2.5 of Mounjaro and prescribed me a starting dose of 5mg.
Today was one week since my last dose of Wegovy, and I’ve just injected my first dose of Mounjaro (5mg).
I suppose I’m asking, has anyone else done the same, can I expect anything much different side effect wise from the Wegovy? My only side effects in the past were some really unpleasant nausea, a bit of diarrhoea, but not too bad.
I’ve lost about 10kgs since I started in February. My original BMI was 31.6, now down to 27.6. and I obviously want to get down to a bmi somewhere between 19 and 23.
When I was on the Wegovy, the times when I went more than a week between doses, I did really notice the effects wearing off, and when I was premenstrual, I still craved cheese and carbs. Will the same happen with Mounjaro?
Sorry for all the questions and the long post, I don’t know where to else to ask, and my GP doesn’t have a lot to say about it other than it will benefit me to be a healthy weight.
Thanks in advance if you’ve read all this, and sorry if there were already similar threads but I couldn’t find one.

Also, if you just want to come on here to tell me that weight loss injections are crappy, please don’t, I already feel bad enough having to be on them. Ty Flowers

People get different side effects, so until you try it you won’t know. I imagine you’ll get nausea, an upset tummy and sulphur burps for a few days and feel knackered.

sounds like wegovy was working, plateaus are normal and will happen on mj too. Just keep going, track your macros and ensure you are in a deficit, try and build some muscle and keep going.

I’ve been on mj since august and on 12.5 for a few months and don’t get any side effects now, my body tolerates it well.

good luck!

WeightLossUsername · 15/07/2025 12:43

Thank you!

I don’t know what sulphur burps are - is it just foul tasting burps and wind? I don’t think I ever experienced that.

Do you think my GP was too quick to change me over, if plateaus are normal? And does my weight loss sound like a reasonable amount given the dosages and time?

Ive not been given any advice at all re macros, deficit or anything really. Just told that the jabs will decrease my need for food and will therefore result in weight loss where my previous efforts have failed. I’m a recovered cancer patient, which piled a heap of weight on between chemo and steroids, so maybe my GP feels like this is a last ditch effort for me.

Also, does it sound ok to have gone straight to the 5mg Mounjaro because I was on the Wegovy? Sorry again for all the questions and thanks for your advice so far.

Your GP is an idiot.

There should be 5 weeks clear of W before stating MJ and it should always start at 2.5mg. I would be looking for a new GP.

Doggymummar · 15/07/2025 12:58

I swapped from the top dose of Ozempic to MJ and had to start at 2,5. I don't believe it is recommended not to, but, not a doctor. Hopefully you'll be grand. I didn't get any suppression until 10mg on MJ. It was a hard few months of willpower to be honest.

RussianDoll76 · 15/07/2025 13:01

I don’t have any experience of wegovy but I did choose to have Mounjaro as it statistically has less cases of side effects . I feel going down in dosages on mounjaro may cause your food noise and hunger to come back and this is why the doctor hasn’t started you from scratch. As for how to optimise the jabs I was given this advice from now maintainers of substantial weightloss with mounjaro.
So I have at least 3 litres of water per day I have 2 electrolyte tablets in a litre and a half of that. I eat fruit , salad and vegetables every day. I take a high strength multivitamin. I count calories watch my protein so I know I am having enough to fuel in my body so it’s healthy . I downloaded nutracheck which counts all my calories fibre and protein for the day . It’s a great tool even though I was highly sceptical as I am anytime an app needs paying for 😂. I have to say as someone who has a very weak stomach and everything upsets it I have had no side effects at all other than the first 24 hrs I started which was achey shoulders neck and back . Weightloss is good as long as I stick to the rules . Finding a new relationship with food and the first time ever I’ve watched what I’m putting into my body and noting the effects. I feel amazing . My friend started the same time as me and is kind of winging it relying on fullness as a guide but she’s suffering with multiple SE and she’s lost half the weight I have . Definitely work with it . I hope you have a smooth transition and great results ! 😁

You should be given some nutritional advice, lifestyle changes as what will happen after the medication?

Yes sulphur burps are the stinky burps due to slow digestion.

Peridot1 · 15/07/2025 13:02

I think your GP was too quick to move you but Mounjaro is supposed to be better. Everyone reacts slightly differently to the medications so it’s hard to advise really what you should expect.

The general advice is to have a break between Wegovy and Mounjaro if changing. I changed and was using Boots as my supplier at the time and I had to have a break of four weeks. However I follow an Irish lady on Instagram who is being prescribed hers by an endocrinologist and he switched her with no break. He said it wasn’t necessary.

The medications are an amazing tool but you do need to work with them. You need to prioritise protein and fibre and drink lots of water. You should also be exercising so as not to lose too much muscle mass.

Give yourself some time to adjust to the new medication. And don’t feel embarrassed about taking the medication.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/07/2025 13:14

The Wegovy doses don’t make sense. You start at 0.25mg then go up to 0.5mg. Don’t know where 1.7 is coming in. (Maybe wrong. Don’t have my box to check)

WeightLossUsername · 15/07/2025 14:17

Ok, sounds like I maybe haven’t had the best advice diet and nutrition wise. I’ll definitely look into that as I want to have the best success possible. It’s a huge financial outlay for me, so I don’t want this to fail!

My Wegovy doses were: 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 then 1.7. I think it can go up to 2.4?

So @magicpant, will starting at 5 instead of 2.5 do me any harm? I mean I realise it’s probably a bit late to ask as I’ve already taken the dose, but it would be good to at least be pre-warned. x

Peridot1 · 15/07/2025 14:27

I wouldn’t think it will do you any harm. It is still a low dose and you were on a higher dose of Wegovy. If you do get more severe side effects or feel very unwell obviously contact your GP. Don’t eat anything very fatty as that may make you feel a bit queasy.

There are loads of threads on here about the various medications and various monthly Mounjaro threads as people start. It may be worth having a look at some of those for help and advice going forward f your haven’t had any nutritional advise so far.

Your GP doesnt sound great.

There is a mn board specifically for weight loss injections op. Its always busy, lots of traffic. Its a different board to just weight loss. There is loads of help and advice on the jabs, diet, nutrition and side effects.

Crunchymum · 12/08/2025 20:40

I know this is an old thread but this all sounds nuts.

From a purely "weightloss" perspective you are meant to have a gap of 5 weeks when switching between Wegovy and MJ. You would also always start MJ at the loading dose.

The OP also doesn't say why the GP has prescribed this medication (assuming it is for another medical condition and maybe that negates the other factors?) but based on the limited info the OP posted it all sounds dodgy!! You don't get prescribed MJ from a GP with "just" a BMI of 31.6?

Edited to add I've re-read and it seems like the OP is somewhere outside of the UK where the rules are different and she does also sound like she pays for her prescription.
