Ahh what do you do to stop the mosquitos at night?

I keep the windows closed and use a fan instead. But I wake up every morning with at least two new bites!

I do tend to have the back door open all day (obviously close it in the evening) as it’s so hot at the moment.

What can I do to keep the mozzies away? I don’t want to sleep with the smell of the chemical spray repellent. Do those electric repellents work? Or anything else?

I live in the UK but they find me at this time of year!!

Get one of those magnetic screens you affix to the edges of the door for the back door and / or one of those pop up mosquito net tents for your bed.

Vegandiva · 15/07/2025 02:04

Also aren’t you meant to keep the windows and doors closed during the day and only open them in the night / early morning to keep the house cooler?

McTootsBagpipes · 15/07/2025 02:10

My husband wasn’t brought up in the U.K. and every year we have him complaining that you cannot buy windows with built in fly screens here. I think it will become more popular as we get warmer summers and more mosquitos here.

HeadWall · 15/07/2025 06:41

We installed fly screens on all of our windows and the back door.
My grandparents used to have one of those beaded curtains over the door, loved playing with that!

MidnightPatrol · 15/07/2025 06:42

Are you sure it’s mosquitos?

Could it be fleas?

OneRealRosePlayer · 15/07/2025 07:15

i use an electric mosquito repellent. It mostly works for me

angelinawasrobbed · 15/07/2025 07:19

I have a plug in thing full of fluid that gives off a vapour to deter them.

WildFlowerBees · 15/07/2025 07:24

Incognito do mossie stuff and I think it’s all natural. So doesn’t stink like deet.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 15/07/2025 07:38

Screen on back door. Most of the time you are just letting hot air circulate - solar gain.

Thegalluspigeon · 15/07/2025 07:47

I didn’t know you could get mosquitoes in the UK. None in Scotland thank fuck.

Surely you’d know it was mosquitoes that bit you though as you’d hear them. They always buzz in your ears the disgusting things, you wouldn’t just wake up with bites. I think you’ll have to buy some kind of screen like they have in other countries.

Mumblechum0 · 15/07/2025 07:51

Definitely tons of mosquitoes this year in south east England at least.my body looks like a dot to dot puzzle

Mokel · 15/07/2025 07:55

What about prevention? Use mint, citrus or tea tree shower gel. Ditch anything coconut or fruity.

Solasum · 15/07/2025 07:56

I have put adhesive hooks on the ceiling and we now use ‘mosquito net dome tents’ from Amazon. You pull it taut at at the top behind the back of the bed, then stretch it right round the sides.

EBearhug · 15/07/2025 07:59

Mossie net over the bed, screens on windows, insert repellent on you.

ButtSurgery · 15/07/2025 08:00

Find the source. Is it your drains? A pond? Water feature? Treat the water if you can. I use chlorine tablets.

Then I have plug in blue lights from Lidl, one upstairs and one down. I've only needed them a couple of nights this year, so I've managed to prevent them breeding in the garden by the looks of it!

EBearhug · 15/07/2025 08:00

Any measures you take shoukd work whether they're mosquitoes or any other sorrt of biting insect.

MollyButton · 15/07/2025 08:13

I have a mosquito net over my bed. One did get into it last week but I spotted it and killed it.

I’m pretty sure… but this is making me doubt myself now! They feel like mosquito bites and DH catches the odd one each day.

We do live close to some stagnant water (we’re in London).

Maybe I’ll set off a bug bomb before we go away in a few weeks, and get some of those screens for the windows!!

West Australians all have fly screens on all windows and doors. It’s the only thing that reliably works.

Turmerictolly · 15/07/2025 11:01

Have you checked for bedbugs?

Mumblechum0 · 16/07/2025 20:16

Mosquitoes definitely in large numbers in SE England unfortunately.
