Something nice to mark the end of primary school year 6

Did you/are you planning on doing anything nice for the last day of primary school for your Y6 child?

I am not usually one to do stuff like this, and find a lot of it OTT, but I think my dd would appreciate something special even if it’s small. She’s had a couple of really tough years with a medical diagnosis and some other stuff going on, and this year she has just done so fantastically well and really pushed herself and I am so proud.

Would love some ideas if anyone has any! She wouldn’t be into a ‘get together with friends’ type of thing, but I can’t really think of what we can do for her. Not balloons because we have a young spaniel who will lose his mind over them 😂

Isn’t the school laying on something?

YorkshireFelix · 14/07/2025 11:32

Sorry I just came back to clarify they have had a leavers disco last week, then have a leavers assembly tomorrow! This is more a nice thing to come home to on the final day, if you get what I mean 😃

Following for ideas for my daughter! Im thinking something would be lovely but no clue what!

springissprung2025 · 14/07/2025 11:39

my Grandsons class are going to the local park with parents for a picnic. He’s then asked to go to our local favourite restaurant for early dinner and I’ll meet him and his Mum there at 5pm

We have school leavers party on Friday after school. May do something on Saturday but not sure what yet, so another one following for ideas.

Glad to read the school are being sensible and no such nonsense as a year 6 prom.

A meal out perhaps?

Magnificentkitteh · 14/07/2025 11:46

I think I took my DD for a giant ice cream after primary school ended and let her choose toppings etc

Yes I’ve seen a few going all out with a high school style prom which is a bit much. We did a parent organised disco with some snacks and a DJ which the kids were happy with.

We always went out for a milkshake/ ice cream in a restaurant etc on last day of the year. Still do it now and DD is well into secondary. A chance to chat and I’d always get her something I wouldn’t usually buy like an enormous freak shake or something

Mcdonaldsbreakfast · 14/07/2025 12:27

Every year we have a party and picnic in the local park organised by the parents.

Beepbird · 14/07/2025 13:38

A Lego set? One of the fancier ones? If she’s into it of course..

Some sort of out of the ordinary experience might be nice to mark the occasion and make it seem a bit more special. It depends what sort of things you do usually and what you all enjoy - like going straight from school to the beach and having a picnic/BBQ tea on the beach, cooking sausages on a fire, playing some games and staying till the sun starts to set, may be right up your street and be a lovely memory or maybe you do stuff like that several times over the summer holidays usually anyway. Or maybe you don't live anywhere near a beach!

But some sort of twist up on the normal regular routine is what would make it special. Staying out later, not worrying about normal tea times, having a less than balanced tea, because it's special. Or go home via the supermarket, give her a £20 note and say she can pick whatever she wants to have for tea even if that's just three types of ice cream and a fizzy drink. Settle in front of a favourite film and chill.

My mum and dad took me out for afternoon tea.

MinnieMountain · 14/07/2025 13:56

DS is having a takeaway of his choice. Our local Asda sells sparkling peach juice in champagne style bottles, so I’ll buy a bottle of that to toast his last day.

YorkshireFelix · 14/07/2025 13:59

Thanks all, some great ideas here. I did actually have the thought of putting together an afternoon tea type thing, or maybe a picnic in the park as she would like that. Or maybe a mobile afternoon tea transported to the park!

@givemushypeasachanceyes I think the twist on normal routine to make it special is a good prompt. I so wish we were closer to the coast as dd loves the beach but we’re about 2 hours away! I’m very envious of people who are close enough to do an after school trip!!

We just took our son out for something to eat at the weekend, once he'd finished Year 6. He's a bit of a foodie, and likes going to a pub restaurant or other types of restaurants. He got extra pocket money along with it too. He didn't go to the school Leavers disco, it's not his scene at all.
