What are your go to dinners for when everyone in the house is ill? Unfortunately not asking for a friend 🤧

Some kind of super easy ramen made from noodles with stock, some veg from the freezer, peanuts and spicy sauce.

murasaki · 13/07/2025 23:14

It depends on the kind of ill, surely. Sorry you're having a rough time.

Fluey, home made soup from the freezer.
Upset stomach, water and toast

mindingmyown37 · 13/07/2025 23:17

Upset stomach in our house is either plain pasta or toast (with marmite) for me… we still eat normally with colds or flu. Sometimes when after I’ve been sick I’ll go for a mcchicken sandwich from McDonald’s, strange but it actually helps.

Jellycatspyjamas · 13/07/2025 23:34

Depends what it is but tinned tomato soup helps most ills, or toast/crumpets. I sometimes buy little tubs of custard or creamed rice for the kids because I they will eat them if poorly. And I keep a stick of plain ice lollies to help with hydration.

soup and warm bread

Yup, custard, creamed rice, semolina. Easy, comforting.

Pastina is always my go to. I'll usually use a whole chicken to make the broth so will occasionally serve some of the chicken and some bread for picking at if anyone fancies it.

Or if we're feeling bunged up it's an extra hot curry/chilli/noodle soup.

With either I'll usually do a side of sliced cucumber and watermelon, some crackers and make sure we have plenty of fruit juices in.

Heinz tomato soup and hot Vimto. The panacea for all ills.

Not in the same bowl, of course.

PiggieWig · 14/07/2025 01:13

Surely the answer is always spag bol?

DiscoBob · 14/07/2025 01:24

Scrambled eggs and toast. Maybe baked beans.
Jacket potato with cheese.
For me I'd add a bit of chilli as I like heat when I've got a cold. But nobody else would want that.

Easy comforting quite plain tasting food. No point cooking anything fancy as most illness puts you off eating and dulls your tastebuds.

That and sweets. 🤣

CorvusPurpureus · 14/07/2025 01:40

Bolognese, pesto or chilli from the freezer, whichever is nearest the top, with pasta or rice accordingly (but meh, fine if it turned out to be chilli pasta, or bolog & rice tbh).

a) the dog/cats will happily eat leftovers if people don't have much appetite & b) if anyone is going to be sick later, it's less gross to chuck up a relatively smooth sauce & a carb than anything spicier, crustier or chunkier...

If just me, I'd probably have a cuppasoup & a slice of toast instead, but I'm assuming hungry kids in the mix.

When I’m sick I can’t stand the thought of food. I’ve thrown up before just thinking about the last meal I had. Electrolytes are best, they will replenish you and generally are a god send. If you need to eat, dry toast, black tea, don’t touch oil or milk or anything that sits in the stomach for long

Agree on Heinz tomato soup. Is my go-to for colds or upset stomach once the vomiting has eased.

What is Vitmo? (Australian here, never heard of it)

It’s a fruit flavoured drink (no idea what kind of fruit) that comes in either fizzy or diluted form and is indeed excellent for poorly people. The fizzy one gone slightly flat or the diluted on with hot water, both full sugar versions.

In Oz you'd might get it at Indian stores as I did in the UK. In Victoria at Rob's butchers in Dandenong.

The bottle I have is nine years old but considering it is mostly sugar has a half-life of plutonium.

ArmySurplusHamster · 14/07/2025 11:07

The other thing about Vimto is that it is an anagram of ‘vomit’. I don’t believe that is coincidence.

Howtotrainarabbit · 14/07/2025 11:07

It depends what's wrong and whether you're up for cooking

Also what does everyone fancy

If we're not well my husband and I are likely to want different things
