I’ve discovered a cool thing (literally) to help with this disgustingly hot weather!

Two words: COOLING CLOTHS. It’s a special kind of towel that you wet, squeeze out and it stays cold for HOURS. I heard about them yesterday and got on Amazon and they arrived today. I’ve been using the same one for a few hours now and it’s still lovely and chilly, and I haven’t had to rewet it! I got these but there’s loads on Amazon. I highly recommend. We’re taking these with us when we go on holiday

Are you just draping it over yourself?
I need something to help keep cool in work, I don’t think a damp cloth over my shoulders would be workable though.

mnahmnah · 13/07/2025 19:08

I bought some to take to Florida. They came with no instructions and whatever I did to them, they were just a wet cloth like any other wet cloth. Where are you meant to put it? What do you do with it?

HobnobsChoice · 13/07/2025 19:09

I have these. I wet them, ring out the excess water and then drape it round my neck and shoulders like a scarf. It keeps you cool via evaporation. They're pretty good although not exactly stylish in the office

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/07/2025 19:16

Aren’t they just lightweight cotton or muslin?

No they're a synthetic of some kind. Once it stops feeling cool around your neck you take it off and shake it/wave it around, then it becomes cool again. When the shaking stops working it's time to rewet it.

They are like a kind of sports vest material, the kind that wicks sweat away.

They aren't soaking wet once you wring them. You can wear them like a choker. Or drape them. Draping can create wet patches on clothes.

They cool the blood in your main artery which feels frankly amazing.

I often soak my t-shirt in weather like this, nipping into the bathroom to do it. The coolness is amazing.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 13/07/2025 19:46

I’m not sure how a wet towel on your skin could cool the blood in your ‘main artery’ ie. your aorta. It’s pretty deep inside your body. 🤔

HobnobsChoice · 13/07/2025 22:23

If it's around your neck it cools your carotid arteries one of which rises from the aorta. Regardless of which artery it cools it definitely does have an effect

I hate hot weather and these have been godsend for me.

I drape it around my neck then at bedtime I lay it over my arm or leg.

Both carotid arteries branch off from the aorta. Nope, still can’t see it.

Wet it and ring it out well. Wrap around shoulders or wherever.

The trick though, when it's no longer cold enough hold the sides and flick it. Then then makes it much colder without having to wet it again.

NightsweatNinja · 15/07/2025 08:24

I do this with a flannel 🤷🏻‍♀️ When it warms up you just twirl it around to cool it.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 15/07/2025 08:31

This works with a regular towel or muslin.

I discovered it, although not the first one to, when I was desperately hot in a friend's house. I ended up using my hung up bath towel and fell asleep immediately.

It works the same way as sweat without making you gross and dehydrated.

TheTruthWillSetYouFreeMaybe · 20/07/2025 19:18

Bought some last year - a medical condition means that when I am in extreme pain, my temperature hits the roof and sometimes leads to a seizure . These help. Soak in cold water, almost ring out and then have one round back of neck and one one my chest, when they get hot, give them a flick and they’re cold again. Something to do with evaporation and the holes in the fibres. I’ve just ordered some more and going to cut them down to lay on my forehead etc

winnieanddaisy · 21/07/2025 14:51

I’ve seen these demonstrated on QVC . The idea is to wet them in a bowl of water ,(or the sea or swimming pool) , wring them out and then get hold of the ends and snap them outwards . It’s this final snapping action that makes them so cool without wetting you .

marshmallowfinder · 21/07/2025 15:23

It's wring, not ring. I've got two. They're quite helpful, especially with a fan on you too!
