Will I ever get butter stain out of my linen trousers?

I'm on holiday and stupidly (and absent mindedly) put a small wrapped round of butter in to my trouser pocket and sat in the car. It's melted all over my trousers and my underpants. Pants thrown out but is there anything I can do about the trousers while I'm away?

Washing up liquid would be your best bet. You need to remove the grease.

Runningoutofpatiencefucksandmoney · 13/07/2025 17:30

I second that - put washing up liquid on it neat. Leave to soak in and then wash. If you've washed already, you've set the stain

I had a stain from dropping premium coleslaw on my T-shirt. Read that WD40 is good for greasy stains. Sprayed it on stain and gone

Oooh, I did that once too while I was on holiday.
It's recommended to take a blunt knife and gently scrape away the excess butter then take a paper towel and blot carefully as much as you can to get the excess grease up.
Put some stain remover or dish soap on the area and gently rub it with a soft brush or your fingers.
Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it in the hottest water that is recommended on the care label and do not put in a dryer, until you are sure the stain is completely gone because the heat of the dryer will set and he's stain that's left.
A note of caution, it might have been cotton I did this once using dish detergent and what noticed was the particular kind of dish detergent I used must have been strong as it removed a bit of the colour.🤦

I always do grease with washing up liquid. Wet the spot with hot water and rub it in well. Leave to sit for a while then rinse through with very hot water. Wash as usual.

Right, I've done the washing up liquid bit. We're in our campervan so had it to hand. I'll leave it overnight then wash?

Fairy skip the soak spray is pretty good for food related stains

Pringlebeak · 13/07/2025 18:10

I always use talc to soak up oil from clothes, although I don't know if it works on butter.

PurpleSpottedLeopard · 13/07/2025 18:13

Ace stain remover is brilliant for grease stains! My little one sat on a piece of buttered toast in brand new leggings and this worked a treat, even after they’d already been washed once to try and get it out.

Soak up as much as possible with kitchen towel, rub neat washing up liquid into stain, wash using vanish gold powder in addition to normal washing powder/liquid.
I use this method on vinaigrette/ curry/ gravy stains on my white tablecloth, works every time.

Grease Away is great on oily stains.

OwlDoll · 13/07/2025 18:19

Try chalk on the stain before washing it.

Elbow grease, the spray or laundry bar soap will remove it.

NoNameisGoodEnough · 13/07/2025 18:20

Elbow Grease spray is amazing.

The advice I read said to leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it in the hottest water that your care label suggests.
As I mentioned what happened to me, and it could have been just a dish soap with a stronger ingredient in it, but when the item dried, a bit of colour had come out where the dish detergent had sat for a short time.
