Manchester Visit with a Teenager

DD (15) and I are visiting Manchester for a couple of days in the school holidays. We like a city break, and had a great few days in Liverpool last year. I visited Manchester in my early twenties many moons ago but otherwise don’t know the city that well. When we went to Liverpool we enjoyed the Cavern Club in the afternoon, the museum at the docks, and the view from the Anglican cathedral. I remember spending some time in Afflecks Palace years ago- is that still worth a visit? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

Science & industry museum is worth a visit, canal system is then on the doorstep for a wander

The Lowry Centre with all his paintings. There is an immersive experience at the moment too.

Afflecks is still good for teen shopping - the northern quarter is in general. If you like arts and crafts stuff it's worth going to Fred Aldous 3 floors of all the crafts.

If you go to the Lowry then I recommend the kargo food hall - all sorts of foods on offer.

I really like the people's history museum and the gallery on Mosley st - both in the city centre.

Thanks all. The People’s History Museum and the Science and Industry Museum look right up our street. Think we could possibly also fit in a walking tour, but definitely a trip to Affleck’s Palace!

Does anyone know anywhere we could see some live music? I was thinking if there is a pub fairly central that would let in DD it would be fun to hear some music

Also go into John Ryland’s library if you’re passing, it’s a beautiful building. Manchester museum reopened fairly recently after a major refurb so worth a visit too

Check out what’s on at Band on the Wall (they often have gigs with access for under 18s) and it’s a great venue. Also Blues kitchen, Matt and Phreds and have a look what’s on at the Academy (and Academy2).

We did a treasure hunt. It was great and took us to some really interesting places.

Was it an organised treasure hunt?

Have look at freight island. It’s usually got something going on and good for food.

GentlemanJay · 14/07/2025 13:04

No you pay and get clues on a website. You get bits of history and trivia about each spot you visit. I’ve done it in both Cambridge and Manchester. Will find a link for you.

JoyousGuide · 14/07/2025 13:06

My DD (16) enjoyed visiting the Salford Lads Club with the Smiths museum and the street which inspired Coronation street next to it , but will depend on your musical tastes. Trafford centre was also good for shopping

Castlefield bowl & docks, mayfield park, the gay village are good for outside wanders. Central library is an impressive space to peek at. Night and Day, Matt & phredds are both near Afflecks for live music, also look at Yes or Gorilla. Home is a cool arts venue with some bars around it if you’re Castlefield end, also Aviva studios, science & industry museum that side of town too.

Agree with these plus science and industry museum. I also love The Whitworth (short bus ride south) along Oxford Road and the costume museum is worth a mention (disclaimer: never been as it closed a while back but re-opened now - check website!)

Imperial War Museum North worth a visit.

Thanks, this looks like a great way to see some of the city. Also like the look of the food hall

It’s my go to activity whenever I visit somewhere new.

Ask your daughter to Google for things she might enjoy
