Upset re if read about cruelty to animals

I find it plays on my mind/ upsets me for quite a few days if I read eg in the news about cruelty to animals.
I know the answer is not to read the article but they pop up in the news.
I guess the solution is to think it’s outwith my control- and all I can do is donate to, or volunteer with, animal charities.
Having a few challenges re work at moment so doesn’t help my frame of mind.
I guess the answer is, as above, to realise the cases are outwith my control- anyone who knows about psychology- is that the best way to think of it?
Thanks…

It really upsets me too so I don't know the solution. They come up on my newsfeed and I know I shouldn't read them but I do.

All I can think is I have rescued animals and donate to charity but I really shouldn't read those things as I just get sad and angry.

I’m the same and always have been.
I guess that accepting that you can’t control it is one way of dealing with how you feel. And as per the poster above, you can make a positive impact in other ways - donating to charities, adopting rescue animals and so on. I personally don’t eat meat either.

My response is quite extreme, I get very upset. I never read any articles now, but it’s impossible to avoid the subject completely.
I tell myself that the animal in question is no longer suffering and that I won’t feel as upset in an hour, a day, a week etc.

I am of course, absolutely appalled by cruelty towards children, and cruelty in general, but do wonder why animal cruelty affects me like it does.

I once read that having an intense reaction to animal cruelty can be a sign of autism in girls/ women. I’m not diagnosed, but have often wondered about this as it’s not the only feature I have.

Anyway, you are definitely not alone.

There is an advert on the TV to do with bears, I actually cant remember which animal charity its for and that's probably because I have to either look away whilst switching the sound off or just change the channel when it comes on. Its horrific. I dont think any other type of cruelty is shown the same way. Obviously children's charity adverts use actors so its nowhere near the same.

I do donate by direct debit each month to three different animal charities.

I'm the same too. I can't read the articles on my news feed otherwise i think about them for days. I cry when I pass a truck of cows on their way to market on the roads.

Thanks for the responses- I’m so glad I’m not alone. Whenever I have a clear out, I donate a lot to animal charity shops so that helps as well hopefully.

That bear advert is so distressing to me too.

As soon as I hear it, I turn the channel.

I hate any form of cruelty to animals.

I've been like that since I can remember.

It plays on my mind so much that I just try not to let myself get reeled in by adverts etc. I donate to an animal charity and won't even read the updates they send me.

I tell my DP to throw it straight in the bin.

He often say's to me, don't you want to know what you're contribution is doing to help?

I say No! Just chuck it in the fucking bin and don't ask me again!

You can't unsee things or educate cruel people, so best you avoid the exposure in the first place if you can.

abracadabra1980 · 13/07/2025 23:54

I’m the same, too. I have cried so many tears and become so enraged about animal cruelty and I just can’t get my head around how people do

not understand or empathise that animals have feelings, and are sentient beings.

MrsEverest · 14/07/2025 00:10

I’m the same. I think most people with normal levels of empathy are. It’s a massive red flag if cruelty to animals doesn’t bother someone.

I limit news stories that I know will be upsetting, which is most things that are about real cruelty to animals or people. I check review sites of movies to make sure there won’t be animal cruelty or torture etc.

Take control and go vegan.

HarkerandBarker · 14/07/2025 03:18

Don't make her feel worse than she already does. Anyway....how do you know she's not already vegan?

I'm a strict vegetarian and that's my limit!
I'm not a martyre.
Also, how does becoming a vegan stop other people being cruel to animals? Its not just about the food chain!
