Have you tried the mchat questionnaire OP? It's designed for toddlers over 16 months.

No I’ve never heard of that! Is that on google ? X

How old is your son?
If he's at nursery or school it would be worth discussing your concerns with the SENCO ( Special Needs Coordinator). You can also discuss your concerns with your son's GP.
There's good advice on the process here:- https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/autism/getting-diagnosed/how-to-get-diagnosed/

Thank you! He is 2 doesn’t go to nursery.
the things I’m noticing are
he doesn’t like any new clothes and will go and get the same old clothes he’s got a few tops and shorts he’ll happily wear but that’s it he gets stressed and cries if I try anything else on him! Same as shoes ! Same 2 pairs of shoes and won’t wear any others !
he will get soaking wet in a paddling pool / bath and be okay with that but it if he gets a small amount of water on him other than bath / pool he’ll be really upset and just keep saying wet wet cries !
he plays with the same toys, and doesn’t like anything on his chair, he doesn’t say much for his age either. He doesn’t acknowledge if he’s upset someone or hurt someone and if you tell him that’s not nice he just laughs, xx

I think that all sounds normal for his age OP. A lot of 2 year olds like familiarity eg the same clothes and toys or the same story read over and over again.

Loveduppenguin · 15/07/2025 09:13

Sounds like a very normal 2yr old

That sounds exactly how my neuro typical daughter was at 2 not how her 2 autistic brothers were!
That's all part of normal development!

Eixample · 31/10/2025 08:22

This sounds like normal development as long as it passes. My NT children (both tested for ND as they screen all kids at their school) had attachments to clothes at certain points and my son, for example, refused to wear things with a splatter pattern (we had loads of t-shirts like this because my daugher had a strong preference for this pattern). We also had some bizarre phases like fear of threads, fear of clouds. Speech can also suddenly explode, and there are other reasons for speech delay such as poor hearing.

The following article might help as it gives some ideas of what to look out for: What is Autism.
Might also be worth reading 'raising a sensory smart child' as it covers sensory processing difficulties.

EverydayProfessional · 10/06/2026 12:26

My first thought would be to speak to the health visitor. Some of what you've described is very common at 2, but there's no harm in getting some advice if you're concerned. Here's an article on the early signs of autism in babies and toddlers that might be helpful for you to have a read through.

As said above, I'd ask if you can be seen by Health Visitor, they will have more of an idea, particularly with speech. Some of it could be normal two year old behaviour, but especially I'd want someone to check his speech out with you.

Wajeehakamran · 10/06/2026 14:55

Autism can present very differently from one child to another, so there is no single set of signs. Parents often notice differences in communication, social interaction, play, sensory sensitivities, or routines, but these behaviours can also occur in children who are not autistic. If you have ongoing concerns, it may be worth discussing them with your GP or health visitor, who can advise on whether a developmental assessment would be helpful.
