Placental abruption

I have posted this in pregnancy but reposting here for traffic.

Yesterday I began bleeding heavily out of the blue. A scan showed that baby is currently okay but that part of my placenta has detached. I'm only 14 weeks so they've sent me home with the advice not to over do it and to come back in three weeks for another scan.

Does anyone else have similar experience of this? I'm wondering how my pregnancy will be managed now, whether I will be classed as high risk, need a planned section etc.

I’m sorry no experience just wanted to boost your post. Get a huge amount of bed rest.

Has the bleeding stopped? I’m surprised you haven’t been kept in for a couple of days for monitoring so I guess that’s a good sign.

Expect additional growth scans. It will be a balancing act between baby and maternal health which can be scary I know. I had very sudden and severe preeclampsia with my first leading to a 32 week birth due to partial abruption. I also had preeclampsia with my second but he had to be prised out so there’s literally no telling how these things go. I had fortnightly growth scans and just had to tick weeks off based on the outcome.

I had a section but was told it was more to do with baby position.

Keeping my fingers crossed for a long and uneventful pregnancy for you. x

The bleeding is much lighter now and brown rather than red but it hasn't completely stopped. The doctor said I could stay or go but whatever I choose wouldn't impact the outcome so I went home as I have a toddler and I thought I'd get more sleep at home too.

I'm scared of developing preeclampsia as my blood pressure was high and there was protein in my urine but they said that was likely the stress of the situation.

It's so scary that it's just a waiting game now. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I had an almost complete abruption at 31 weeks. It all went a bit crazy but we made it out the other side. Dts were tiny and we did six weeks in NICU/SCBU.

very very different to your circumstances, mine was cause by a uterine surgery I had to have (nice, relaxing pregnancy!).

my main takeaway was that they really didn’t know what they were dealing with. Get as much knowledge on board as you can and push to be seen very regularly. Are under an FMC?

take it as easy as you can, hard with a toddler, I realise!

Thinking of you. My youngest is almost 8yo and was delivered at 31+4w due to a severe placental abruption. Luckily, I made it through as did he.

Get plenty rest. I am glad you got loads of advanced warning.

Thank you both. I'm so glad to hear your babies were okay.

Sorry what is a FMC? My first pregnancy was completely textbook so this is all unknown to me.

No problem - Fetal Medicine Centre

Thank you. No but I did notice a consultant had been added to my care team on badger notes. I think I will know more after the second scan. I think they're just going for wait and see at the moment as I'm so early still.

Can I ask how things went for you OP?

im in a similar boat - bleeding episodes from 9 weeks, diagnosed at 16 weeks with partial placental abruption. Currently 20 and hoping for the best
