Zoo tomorrow in 31 degree heat?

CAKKKE · 11/07/2025 19:38

My 3yo asked to go to the zoo which we love to do. We have a 3yo and 1yo. 3yo has football early Saturday morning so we'd be setting off about 10.30 get there about 11am

He doesn't have a pram doesn't like it but after our zoo days he usually at the end wants carrying as its a lot!

Is it too warm to go? He'll obviously be in cool clothes as will my youngest and have suncream hats plenty of water etc. My youngest can get in the pram when tired

Silly but just wondered am I being irresponsible taking my young kids out in 31 degrees to the zoo which involves a bit of walking

I wouldn't. Or make it clear if you get tired we go home, I'm not carrying you.

Coconutter24 · 11/07/2025 19:40

I wouldn’t be carrying a 3 year old in 30 degree heat. If he won’t walk it all I wouldn’t go. He might find it even more tiring in the heat meaning he’s asked to be carried earlier than usual

Overtheatlantic · 11/07/2025 19:41

I wouldn’t and I hope the animals will be mostly indoors during the strongest heat of the day.

Which zoo?

Michele09 · 11/07/2025 19:43

You might not see any of the animals, they'll likely be indoors or in the shade under trees and vegetation. Don't underestimate how far you walk on a day at the zoo, it would be exhausting in the heat.

missmarplesapprentice · 11/07/2025 19:46

Are you a member or would you be paying on the gate for the day? If it was the latter it would be a hard no from me. If you were a member you could go for an hour or so then come back before you all end up hot and tired.

This. We took MiL to Yorkshire Safari Park (bucket list, she died later that year) on a hot day. She was hot and tetchy and the animals were all hiding away in the shade. It wasn't a great day out.

lovemycbf · 11/07/2025 20:02

As others have said I really wouldn’t
It’s just unbearable when it’s that hot.

CAKKKE · 11/07/2025 20:03

I had a niggling feeling but thanks all. Even today we went to the park early before it got. Boiling then I had the pool out in the garden which he loved had a few hours in the garden then was wiped about 3pm anne shattered from the heat ! So think the zoo would just really take it out of him

And I hadn't even thought about the animals taking shelter which makes sense completely.

I honestly couldn’t think of much worse than a day out in the blistering heat who wants carrying.

why would you even consider doing that to yourself?! 😂

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 11/07/2025 20:05

I wouldn't. The animals won't be moving anyway.
Save it for a cooler day in September when all the school kids have gone back (unless your 3yr old starts school).
Even borrow a double buggy when you do go so he can flop when he needs to.

FlowerPower2525 · 11/07/2025 20:06

Just say. Sorry it's too hot to go to the zoo tomorrow, the animals will all be inside. Well go next weekend ( or whenever)

bert3400 · 11/07/2025 20:08

I took my grandson to our local zoo in the last heat wave, it was our only day together as I live abroad. We got there as the zoo opened ...all the animals where out and about and it was cool enough (27/28) to be pleasant. By 11-12 O'clock it was heaving with school parties and very uncomfortable in the sun, so we left ....we had 3 good hours and saw more in that time than normal

BCBird · 11/07/2025 20:10

Tell him the animals need to stay out of the sun

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/07/2025 20:11

Which one?

I wouldn't do Yorkshire because its very exposed. They close if its forecast to be too hot for the animals.

Others are mire shady with more inside bits.

LittlleMy · 11/07/2025 20:41

My ex would insist on keeping to weekend plans even if a heatwave was forecast and it was miserable! I have very thin fine hair also and my scalp would just be on fire 😕. I started to use one of those white UV umbrellas in the end - highly recommend (for adults!).

Toddlerstartspreschool · 11/07/2025 20:50

Not a chance.
I have a 3 year old who sounds very similar tantrum not to take the pushchair then expect dad to carry.
Also even with suncream etc wouldn't want her out in that heat.

user2848502016 · 11/07/2025 20:52

I can’t think of anything worse, plus all the animals will be sleeping in the shade

TroysMammy · 11/07/2025 20:55

You won't see any animals. I went to a zoo during a heatwave in the UK and it was too hot for the meerkat lookout to sit on the rock in their enclosure.
