Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

No, we had enough pettiness over COVID.
I want to still have respect for and from my neighbours when it's pissing down as it inevitably will be once the school holidays start.

Plus people have been told stupid things like they can fill their hot tubs with buckets but not hosepipes, as if it's the hosepipe that's the problem.

Vivienne1000 · 11/07/2025 21:13

Put it this way, my neighbour would definitely report me. In covid my mother was dying and my brother came to say goodbye. Afterwards we sat outside in my garden and my neighbour popped her head over the hedge and said she would have to report us for breaking the rules.

Its a shame no one bothered to report the water companies who waste millions of gallons through leaks, poor maintenance, dirty water, people are fed up paying high prices and director bonuses to inefficient and dishonest utility companies.

This. Scandalous! And the British public are the victim.

LlynTegid · 11/07/2025 21:16

I think it would depend on the person. Someone like @Vivienne1000 's neighbour if I had one like that I would do 100% every time. My neighbour's are not like that.

U53rn8m3ch8ng3 · 11/07/2025 21:18

No I wouldn't. It's about time the water boards got the hell on with their jobs, fixing water leakages and then we'd surely have a lot more water in reserve.

No hot tubs.

“Watering the garden or plants in your garden at home
Cleaning private vehicles or boats

Filling or maintaining a swimming pool, paddling pool, hot tub or cold-water plunge pool at home

Filling or maintaining a domestic pond or ornamental fountain
Cleaning your home’s walls or windows yourself
Cleaning paths, patios or artificial outdoor surfaces “

There's a separate exemption for newly construction hot tubs not that I really get why

We don’t have a hosepipe ban in our area, in fact I thought only two water companies have imposed bans so far.
But poor DH has to water the veg on his allotment with buckets as there are no hose (or other) pipes on the site at all. Might be a tap there but mostly it’s small water tanks.

Yes I realise that but the fact is that current stocks are low and we are in a drought!
Using more water is going to make that a lot worse for everyone a month or two down the line…

And the water companies should be the ones who are fined and in legal trouble. Not the people who have dutifully paid their bill all year.

Gloriia · 11/07/2025 20:27

I wonder why, what reason would they have for using a hosepipe other to water their grass? Genuine question it just seems an odd exemption.

I wouldn't report anyone, a bit of garden watering would seem peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

Not if everyone did it!

CatloverNY · 11/07/2025 21:27

Depends how often they are watering garden.
My next door neighbour constantly waters his like it can’t be allowed to have yellow grass for 3 weeks of the year.
FGS get a life ! Who cares if the grass dries up for a few weeks.
They frequently p me off using water in their green grass whilst mine looks frazzled.
I don’t care about the grass what irks me is this affects my water pressure when I need a shower.

No i wouldn’t because our water companies have been ripping us off for years! Oh and also im not a pathetic tell tale!

Nails it !!!!

notanormalday · 11/07/2025 21:33

Isn’t it back raining the middle of next week? Tbh we’re all paying the privilege for using water at ridiculous prices, so no I wouldnt grass on them and my plants need watering in this heat

Alifemoreordinary123 · 11/07/2025 21:34

Nope - unless they were being absolutely ridiculous with it. Life is too short for pettiness

Love51 · 11/07/2025 21:34

I've noticed a lot of talk of standpipes. I grew up in the 80s and we were always having hosepipe bans affecting multiple regions and never had standpipes, why do people think we will this time?

We had them in 1976 when I was a child and I remember a few times in the eighties too.

I take it you won't be complaining if we are limited to standpipes, then?

Frankly, refusing to report crime because it would make you a "telltale" is in itself incredibly pathetic.

Errm, we know about those things because they were reported ...

Blackbookofsmiles1 · 11/07/2025 18:43

People throwing other people under the bus whilst the shareholders still profit heavily and don’t fix leaky pipes because people are stupid enough to pay for it anyway.

How can you chop in a neighbour but stand by and be ok about the water company wasting gallons and gallons?

You can of course object to both the neighbour's and the water company's activities. It's not an either/or.

BurntBroccoli · 11/07/2025 18:54

Where will the extra water come from if the summer and Autumn is as dry as spring was?

I live in Wales. It is usually raining. Let the water companies fix their issues before coming after someone who waters their garden or washes their cars.

Dymaxion · 11/07/2025 21:48

I just remembered something from 1976, yes I know other heatwaves are available, when we had a bath, no showers then, my dad had a piece of hosepipe and it would be placed in the bath and fed out through the window, at the bottom my Dad would suck until the water started to flow and watered the garden that way. A fairly revolting top tip for any gardeners wishing to avoid the £1000 fine Grin

scalt · 11/07/2025 21:50

If the culprit is Boris Johnson, then I’d personally chop his head off. Anybody else, nah.

Dymaxion · 11/07/2025 21:51

At the very least you could fill your water butts with the water from your showers, washing up etc, not sure if there is a filter attachment you could add ?

This is why people break laws, commit fraud, bully people and commit DV. Because people call it tattle taling or snitching.

you can put money on the likely correlation between people who commit these acts and those who call people tattle tales and snitches

EllasNonny · 11/07/2025 21:53

I've just used mine but I'm exempt, wonder if any neighbours were watching...

Bazinga007 · 11/07/2025 21:55

As long as golf courses are still watering then I will turn a blind eye.
