Would you report somebody for using a hosepipe during a ban?

Lots of people on FB saying they will continue using as much water as they please as they have “paid for it”.

Reservoir levels are at 55% capacity when normally it’s 89% and with much more hot weather to come, I’m worried that they will implement standpipes due to people being irresponsible.

@Maverickess get a load of this

Other countries have air conditioning In the UK we have yoghurt on the outside of windows Would love for this academic to show me how someone who lives in a tower block is supposed to do this.
Absolute fucking stupidity.

Surely no one here needs to be taught the concept of reflecting radiated heat ? (Even as I type that, I know the answer is "of course they do" ...). You could have had exactly the same effect with a lick of whitewash. I can only presume the journalist for this story owns shares in Unigate.

However, quite aside from wanting to actually look out windows, unless you are careful, all that reflected heat will simply build up elsewhere.

Also, all this wittering on about air conditioner makes me suspect that most people don't realise that all it does is move the hot air from inside to outside - thus making outside even hotter. And that's before you factor in the electricity you are using to achieve that.

I imagine they sit nicely in a Venn diagram of anti-vaxxers and climate change deniers. People who regard science with a deep suspicion until it's been on daytime TV ?

Funnily enough several have had Reform photos as their profile! Very anti-climate.

Are ppl in other countries being told the same? Or just us Brits?!

ilovegranny · 13/07/2025 16:44

First, we should all be bombarding the water companies, complaining to them and shaming them for their neglect for profit. Campaigning local media to focus on that, not some mother filling a small paddling pool for her children, or someone watering their garden - lawns will survive a drought but how depressing is it to see carefully nurtured plants droop and die. 😡

Now why would you make that comment based on what i wrote which (quite deliberately) swerved any political angle ? 😀

Its not just a 2 week heatwave, it's a 5 month drought.

Yes. It is a five month drought where I live.

Santina · 13/07/2025 17:40

Hm, this is an interesting one and so are some of the responses. Do you really think the water company is responsible for lack of rain? We know they make profit from us unnecessarily but that doesn't cause drought. A burst water pipe is due to an aging system and again, is not the cause of lack of rain.

There was a thread on here about climate change, people saying it's too late to turn the clock back. Some of the responses on here are the absolute reason we have climate change. Why do people think they can do what they want, even when told not to do it. Some people's attitude makes my P!$$ BOIL. We all need to think about what we do and the impact of our actions, people's attitudes will also have an impact on the younger generation growing up. Although that's not really going too well either.

Billybea · 13/07/2025 17:45

No way!! When the water companies have leaks going on for days pumping gallons and gallons of water onto the road without fixing it! If it was so precious they would fix their pipes and get someone out early to fix it. Anyway I would love to chat but I have to water my plants! 🤣

Well said @Santina

I don't think @Billybea even read your reasonable post.

You can't reason with people who don't want to listen.

I admit the water companies role is to supply money to shareholders. Obviously given that then really we should be sorting our own supplies anyway and stop distracting them.

Alternatively, you could take the view that it's the role of a public fucking utility to serve the public with utility. And if that means catching rain when it falls so you can supply water when it doesn't they fucking get on with it.

What boils my piss is a contingent of folk who think that because they can put up with shit service, all of us should. Maybe that used to be the case. But I - for one - have very high standards.

For those asking about reservoirs, there are two huge reservoir projects currently underway to help supply the South East: the South East Strategic Reservoir Option (SESRO), near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, which is being developed by Thames Water, in partnership with Affinity and Southern Water; and Havant Thicket reservoir, being built by Portsmouth Water, in partnership with Southern Water. Both reservoirs have been heavily opposed by local campaign groups. More info here: https://www.portsmouthwater.co.uk/new-reservoir/. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd020e02k4jo

I wasn't asking about reservoirs. I was telling 😀

And those projects should have been finished 30 years ago. You know. When we were flogging off the water companies because there was a dip in Rolls Royce sales.

No, they're not responsible for the lack of rain, however if they invested in upgrading their aging networks and fixing the loss from their system then it would preserve this resource, it can and never Will be zero, that's not possible, but perhaps if they were as responsible with the water as they implore their customers to be, it would last longer and have less impact than it currently does when there is a lack of rainfall.

The water companies need to lead by example, and get their own houses in order, not expect customers to foot the bill for their fines and bad management and then guilt trip them into making adjustments when they don't.

longtompot · 13/07/2025 19:25

I'd be more likely to if they were washing their drive or car rather than watering plants, but depends on the neighbour tbh.

All the water company needs is enough people to adhere to the ban. There will always be people that think the rules don’t apply to them

All the water companies need to do is stop pissing millions of gallons of water away with leaks and shoddy pipework while raking millions (billions?) Of pounds in from customers and tax payers, paying stupid bonuses to bigwigs for the amazing job they're doing

Timetodomything · 13/07/2025 23:46

There are people who are on an ‘exempt from the ban’ list approved by the water companies and you can’t always tell what disabilities people have that got them that exemption.

RampantIvy · 13/07/2025 17:09

Yes. It is a five month drought where I live.

Not in the Thames Water region. Reservoirs at 95% capacity, and groundwater levels normal. But they still reckon they need a hosepipe ban.

So either they don’t have enough reservoirs even when they are all full, or the leaks are so extensive that even full reservoirs can’t meet demand. Either way, their problem to fix and not mine.

So do you think you should be able to 'tell what disabilities people have that got them that exemption' or perhaps it's no-one else's business?

Ours are at 62.8% when usually they are at 85.5% at this time of year.
People can argue all they like about how badly the water companies perform, but the main issue is that we have had hardly any rain for months, and using a hose for non essential reasons in protest is pointless and selfish.

And I believe accepting the responsibility for a billion pound business’s failings is short sighted and naive. Especially when we have no choice but to pay for it.
