I'm struggling with an online course that work needs me to do

I work in care and the organisation I work for wants me to study a module. I am studying that now. I enjoyed it to date.

I was given assignments to do from approx the 22nd of June and I have 8 weeks.

I can't believe how fast the time has gone.

I struggled for the past few weeks with researching and finding stuff for the case study.

I did some studying and I did a rough bullet point piece to create larger paragraphs from them.

Buts that's only one question.

I have a few different assignments to do.

I am struggling so so so so much.

It's just my time is being pulled from every direction. I worked all of last week and then Saturday came and I was still working and I had to stay over night and I was hardly allowed sleep. I got a three day migraine from that. I was still somewhat functional and I still had to work.

Now I will likely have to stay late tonight and work again tomorrow morning.

I am getting so tired so easily and just quiet simply do not have the head space to throw myself at this. I have limited time. I have other struggles too in that I have family home from abroad and my time is pulled from every direction.

Work then has me booked to be live in for 2 weeks from next week. I will be lucky if I would be allowed sleep. Never mind time to put pen to paper.

I was planning on packing a backpack of supplies and going to sit down in a hub in a hotel that was designed for workers. I am just so tired so easily. Everyone wants a peice of me.

But you can ask Chat GPT to summarize key points, how best to study the subject and to break it in to manageable sections. If you literally type in the most effective way to study this module and create related content, at least you’ll have a solid plan to tackle it and then you just set your mind to doing it one section at a time

No don't do this. Absolutely don't give them any more of your own time when you're owed time in lieu!

I'd be having a very frank conversation with my line manager about how unfeasible it is to complete this training when no time is available to be allocated to it, and because you're exhausted due to being owed time back.

My point also but op does not seem to be persuing her time back for woken nights

Stonebag · 13/07/2025 18:24

Anyone have experience of assignments.

Can anyone help me please.

Do I write the whole case study paragraph into an introduction or do I just summarise the main points of it?

I was doing a level 5 qualification through work, 20% on the job, so should have had a day week to dedicate to it. Pmsl that was a joke. After a year I had to throw the towel in as I just could not manage it with working full time and being on the road daily. It was too much.

Stonebag · 13/07/2025 21:15

I started work on an assignment this morning at 11.30 am.

I did a few hours of work before taking a short break. Then I went back to it.

I was working all day on this. On organising my research and information into paragraphs.

I am still not even half way through question one.

I have 3 questions to answer but this is only just one assignment. I still have to do two more.

It's just so so so so hard.

I would be able to do this if there wasn't so much pressure from every angle and it's now beginning to feel like an absolute load on my shoulders.

I did get some work done and I like would have been able to get more done but people and distractions are back full on.

It's awful isn't it. You constantly learn about providing dignity and respect towards others and rightly so but the same is never afforded to you as a person or worker.

I did a lot of assignment done yesterday. Still not great progress. Question one was worth the most and it was so long. I am still only half way typing that. The other half is still only drafted in different copy books.

The second answer actually came to me with a few minutes of waking up so I made a note of what was going through my mind and I got ai to clean it up for me.

Still need to work on question three and then another assignment and then another write up assignment. All in all it's so so so so so hard.

I was planning on doing to work this morning. It's everyone around me who will not realise t me as a person or worker and wants everything out of me. I have family from abroad too and hosting them and they are getting drunk most nights and leaving me to babysit too and then also babysit when they have hangovers.

I will never be allowed to get this shit done because nobody respects me.

I will literally have to pull a sock week and book and air band and just go away.

Sounds like you are letting your work walk all over you?

Are you being given paid work time or time off to do this course?

If you're doing it unpaid, you are probably being paid less than minimum wage overall.

Stonebag · 14/07/2025 14:14

It's all so overwhelming and my mental health has hit the floor. I have strong feelings of wanting to catch the bus but I have no plans to do so.

No none of this. They are not giving me time off or any extra allowances. I am expected to keep on working. I don't even get a half day and even if I did get a half day I would likely be too exhausted.

There an extra relief worked coming into to me most days for about 2 or 3 hours and I could get something done then how er I also have other physical work to attend to too.

Actually my plan was to go to work early today to go and sit somewhere quiet and get stuff done e but family and kids and not even my own kids consumed every minute of my time this morning.

Stonebag · 14/07/2025 14:19

I really feel like if I was just allowed the time space and opportunity to throw myself at this for another few more days I could get this done by the end of this week so then I will have some weeks where I can relax but I am not even allowed to do that. I am just not allowed time to do this.

From any direction.

I think my plan at this stage would be to complete this course and then leave because it's ridiculous.

Why are you doing it if you are not being given any time to do it?
Email your boss and say your can't do this module as you haven't been scheduled any time to complete it.
What's your hourly pay as a hca?

alcoholnightmare · 14/07/2025 14:22

What are the modules/tasks? I have a degree in social care studies, NVQ 5, care certificate, and I’m an ex care home manager and NVQ health and social care assessor. Let me help you x

I think work expects me to do this in my time off. Originally my contracted hours were Monday to Friday but that's all different now.

Every day and every week is different. Sometimes I do have some flexibility. Then there are other times and it can be crazy for weeks and weeks. I just had some of those weeks recently and there's many more to come.

I am getting some little blocks of time free. Like I don't need to start work until about 2pm and I could use that time in the morning.

However last week I worked 2 weeks in a row even weekends with the weekend being live in and hardly any sleep.

I then became ill with migraine and I still had to keep on going. So I didn't have the head space last week to do any of this work.

I know my work can be dreadful and there has been some gruelling schudules however there is little bits here and there.

I find this little areas aren't very great for me. I can't do it like this like 15/20/30 minutes here or there. I find I work better in larger blocks of time.

But even if work was to become more accommodating for this, I have family home from abroad who are a nightmare for trying to consume my time and energy. With adults getting drunk and expecting childcare out of me either during their drinking time or their hungover mornings.

I had Saturday free this week and I could have studied but I was still feeling the affects of my migraine from earlier in the week. I still had a low level migraine. I dedicated my time to my neice/nephew for many hours on Saturday. They want so much of my time even mid week.

I wanted to get some work done this morning and I did technically have that time. However no can do. I wasn't allowed the time and headspace. I wanted to then go to work because I am allowed some desk time in a quiet area too but all's no can do.

There are so many demands left right and centre of me from every single angle.

legoplaybook · 14/07/2025 14:57

Why do you want to do this course in the little free time you have though? I'm not understanding that aspect.

Stonebag · 14/07/2025 14:58

I am looking at the work that I have to do and I really think if I was allowed some space and time this week to do some blocks of study I could get this done.

It's not me wanting to do this. It's work that has me doing this. I need it for regulations and to become certified.

I was supposed to start it last winter but there was an issue with the online college and it was delayed to April.

Summer is always crazy in work for me.

If I started this last winter or even in January it would have been much better and more relaxed for me.

Work needs you to do it, but you're not getting any time or pay to do it?

Have you put in writing to your manager that in order to do this module, you need allocated work time to do it?

No I never asked them. They were expecting me to do it in my time off. My college did write saying I need 5 hours a week for this. Down on paper it probable looks like I am getting time off. Every week is different. I did the reading and study materials easily. It's now just time for assignments and I am struggled. I never realised how bad this was going to be in conjunction with more than a full time job and issues and family demands and poor health to top of this.

I only have my assignments for the the last three weeks and I was ok the first week. I started to do a rough plan.

Then I struggled due to demands from work.

Also work had me booked for the last year to be live in for next week so when I start that week it's going to be very very very hard.

August is always the hardest month because the workload usually increases 10 fold too.

I just feel like I I can get blocks of uninterrupted time I could really do my best it focus on this. And at least get a lot of it done before the deadline. It will then free up approx 3 weeks (+2 weeks extension that I will need) weeks to finish.

Once I get into next week it's going to be so so so so hard to get anything done.

Edited

I have level 3 health and social care module.

I do enjoy the course that I am doing. I used to love typing in school and I missed that. I really do like and enjoy what I am doing.

What I am struggling with is the time and headspace to really get this done.

I am thinking about taking a sick day and staying in my bed room with drinks and food and just get this done. That will only be a part of it then. There's still a practical assignment and write up to do. I don't know how.

I less if I talk to the college and to my work about my struggles and defer this.

However they really need me to get this done.

Is there a reason you don't want to ask your manager for the 5 hours a week?
