Do you stay indoors or in shade when it's very hot?

Where I am I never got the heatwave that a lot of the UK experienced however I am now due some heat in the weather this weekend with temperatures that will be in the mid to late 20s high.

I was planning on a day trip for tomorrow. I just want to get away for the day.

But now that there is a heat spell looming it does change my plans.

I practice sun safety and now I don't really fancy walking around touring a town in the middle of the day.

I know the only way is to get up early in the morning and to start my day before the real heat starts however the day will then just be too long. If I start out at 6 or 7 am. I will have to wait til evening to go back home.

I don't own a car so I don't have air conditioning or shelter in a car. It's all walking and public transport.

Now I don't know what to do. I was really hoping on going away for the day and now due to a heat spell I feel like I have to stay at home.

I think you're massively overthinking this really. If you think the heat will ruin the day out for you stay home and go another day.

Why if you go early will you have to wait until the evening to go home?

Can't you just play it by ear and go home if it's too hot to enjoy yourself?

Are there any museums or art galleries you can plan a trip round to have a break from the heat?

Ilovelowry · 11/07/2025 08:29

Before the heatwave, what would you have done in the middle of the day to have a rest?
Do that. More frequently.

Why do you have to wait until the evening to go home? Are there only two trains/buses a day?

I stay in when it's hot, our house stays very cool. I've already shut the windows for the day. But if I had to go out I do it in bitesize chunks.

Doggymummar · 11/07/2025 08:31

No. I don't think it is hot in UK ever but there you go. Last year in Rhodes is was over 40 everyday and I was on the beach from 5.30am till about 9pm. It's been the same in Egypt when I've gone in the Summer. My conservatory is currently 28 degrees and I'm chilly. I have a weird metabolism

ViciousCurrentBun · 11/07/2025 08:31

We are away on hols, yesterday I walked around a small provincial town and caused quite a stir with some comments as I used a white umbrella as a parasol. Some were complimentary and one slightly drunk bloke shouted ‘it’s not raining you know’ in a very broad local accent. It was all a bit Hit Fuzz, I’m guessing not much happens round here.

FfaCoff · 11/07/2025 08:35

Parasol is a great idea. You could also get one of those hand held battery fans.

Amethystanddiamonds · 11/07/2025 08:40

Unless there is an underlying medical condition, I can't see why mid to high 20s is a problem (although I'm a bit chilly until it's around 25C). Wear a sunhat or carry an umbrella, wear suncream and make sure shoulders are covered. Drink plenty of water. Take rest breaks if needed but otherwise go and enjoy yourself!

Ohsotiredme · 11/07/2025 08:55

Well I sympathise with you OP.

I'm on the West coast of Scotland and the weather forecast is extremely warm, for us, this weekend.

I similarly rely on public transport and
it's no fun using it in hot weather. The buses are infrequent and so there is a lot of waiting around in the heat and the buses are overcrowded when they do arrive.

Personally here I can't stand the way people behave here when it's hot. We get droves of people from the nearest cities and towns. Many of them drunk and walking round the streets scarcely decent and the atmosphere is really unpleasant and intimidating.

So this weekend my plan is to stay around my home and garden, with probably evening walks on the beach when it's cooler and quieter.

MrsEverest · 11/07/2025 09:07

Mid to late 20s? That’s lovely weather!

If it’s not for you just tone things down - walk slowly, stay out of the sun in the middle of the day, drink plenty of water.

I certainly wouldn’t stay in!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/07/2025 09:32

In many countries that are pretty much always hot, and particularly where they don’t want a tan, people often use umbrellas as parasols. A very sensible idea we should adopt here during heatwaves.

Aparecium · 11/07/2025 09:38

Wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, loose clothes, including a shirt to protect your shoulders and decolletage, carry a drink and sip frequently. Walk in the shade where possible.

This umbrella has been a game-changer for me.

Some people feel the heat more than others.

Mandarinaduck · 11/07/2025 09:43

I use an umbrella for shade as well as sunscreen. I couldn’t care less if people think I look weird.

That said, I wouldn’t go out for a day in a town in hot weather - I just don’t enjoy walking around in full sun. It’s ok if you can spend most of the time in cool old buildings or air conditioned museums.

Britneyfan · 11/07/2025 09:55

It’s going to be at least 30 degrees here today. Having lived in N Ireland, Scotland and the South East, I get annoyed on here when people say the weather isn’t that hot etc, the weather can be significantly different in different areas of the country! There is a difference of 7 degrees today between N Ireland and the South East. That turns 23 degrees plus to 30 degrees plus and is a whole different ball game. Also some people are just more sensitive to the heat than others.

I find the ever hotter summers here very difficult these days, and personally when there is a heatwave I do stay in if at all possible (of course sometimes I have to work!) as I have portable air-con in my bedroom and a huge very effective tower fan in my living room. I will sometimes sit under shade in my garden! But more and more I am staying inside to escape the heat. I have had heat exhaustion multiple times (usually at work where the building traps the heat horribly, but once on holiday abroad), and I feel physically awful for days afterwards and it also really affects my mental health. I personally wouldn’t want to walk around a city in this weather, though if you want to go and going earlier would make a big difference (again depending where you are in the country may affect how much the heat calms down at nighttime or not) then I also don’t see why you can’t go earlier and come back earlier. But personally having to get up at the crack of dawn would spoil any day out for me, I am not a morning person and need my sleep!

Mikart · 11/07/2025 09:58

30 degrees here. I did a 5 mile walk at 6am.
Showered, about to go for coffee with a friend. I won't go out again today. Tomorrow I will do exactly the same.

Caravaggiouch · 11/07/2025 09:59

I’m sure all the “call this a heatwave!” people will be out in force. But I wouldn’t fancy being on public transport in the middle of the day either - obviously the OP is sharing she’d have to wait to go home because she doesn’t want to be on the bus or train in the hottest part of the day.

I get it OP, and would be tempted to change my plans to something a bit cooler. That doesn’t have to mean staying in altogether, but town and city centres always feel hotter than the coast or forest areas.

If you’re chilly up to 25 degrees it rather sounds like you are the one with an underlying medical condition.

LadyJaneGrey18 · 11/07/2025 10:23

Honestly it’s comic how British people behave when there is a bit of sun. I’m British by the way.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 11/07/2025 10:54

I do - I'm on SSRI's which have ruined my tolerance for heat, even if I try and cover up and drink plenty of water. I'm currently on the sofa watching TV.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 11/07/2025 11:13

I would prefer to stay indoors or in shade when it's very hot, as I have fair skin and I'm too British for this heat. Give me cooler weather, please! Unfortunately, I have an outdoor job which doesn't come with built-in shade or air conditioning.
