Quiet spots in Central London

My autistic DS (17) has agreed to come with us to London for a few days as he is keen to visit the Natural History Museum. He’s only left the house twice this year so this is a pretty big deal. I’m conscious that he could become overwhelmed with all the crowds, buildings, and traffic.

I know there’s a few parks but which parks are best for potentially seeing wildlife (he loves birds) and are there any good quiet spots we could visit if he’s finding it a bit much?

I was going to mention PostmansPark. Family relative there. And there is a park behind Kings Cross I think or maybe St Pancras. Don’t know London well

London Zoo never feels too busy (we've been many times), lots of birds there. Regents park and Primrose Hill are right there - nice views from the top of Primrose Hill.

I agree bout the Zoo. Especially early in the morning. In fact I don’t know how they can stay open it’s been so quiet the last few times I’ve been there recently.

And Regents Park would be perfect.

Anywhere in the city of London on weekends is fairly quiet. Museum of London? Barbican? Clerkenwell? Though Exmouth market is rammed at weekends.
But during the week it'll be very busy. They're isn't anywhere really super quiet in central London to be honest.

I agree with the people who say don’t use the tunnel from South Ken to the museums. I did that one half term with DD and can still remember the horror.

@Weepixie much love,💐 last went with my sister who was still recovering from a stroke and she loved it. We saw the pelicans. xxx

The cast room at the V&A is gorgeous.
Brompton Cemetery is historical, quiet and has a lovely cafe. Very near Earl's Court.

Hallo. If you have a blue badge, the car might be a good idea. You can look up parking on the blue badge parking app and have a few options saved on your phone.

If you're going to Battersea anyway, the children's zoo is super chill. My junior autistic Londoners love it.

I wouldn't go to Barnes and I live here. It's bloody miles from the South Bank.

NB pretty sure that the Science Museum's Space section is currently being refurbished, but definitely check before you go there for that.

The Museum of London is closed (and has been for 3 years). It will finally reopen in its new location in 2026 (no date announced yet).

Ah sorry. It's reopening in Smithfield market. I didn't know the old site had shut though. That area is still quite good for exploring on a weekend if you want quiet central.
There's a lot of historical things round there.

I second Holland Park, it’s beautiful and lots to see. Plus an incredible restaurant.

Needlenardlenoo · 11/07/2025 22:15

Don't go in the SM Space section in weather like this! It's 30 degrees in there on a cool day!

If you travel a bit further out Clissold Park near Finsbury is beautiful

This is such a lovely park, but unfortunately it reminds me of the ex who broke my heart into smithereens. 🙃

Ah you and me both! Was his name Paul? 🤔😢

So many great ideas here thanks! I’ve decided to postpone our trip until September so the weather will still be nice but a little less crowded and I’ll have longer to plan properly. I’m still gonna take the other DC in August but go with just DS in September so I can 100% focus on his needs. I’m also going to aim for one of the quiet sessions at NHM.

The NHM (Life Galleries) but if you enter via the old Geological Museum
(Earth Galleries) round the corner on Exhibition Rd, then the queues are generally shorter and quieter.

Staywithmemyblood · 12/07/2025 09:23

Good call @BlueNell - and it means 2 lovely trips for you too. Win, win!

I would highly recommend getting up super early, and possibly get on a Lime bike.
In the summer I sometimes cycle around London at 5am. It's beautiful and empty.
Depending on where you stay, you could also just go for an early morning walk around the south bank, or walk from Big Ben up to Trafalgar Square via Leicester Sq to Piccadilly Circus.
Whenever I do that, I usually then go back to bed for a few hours to catch up on sleep.

He's only left the house twice this year
In that case, I wouldn't recommend riding a bike because he's not even used to walking for any distance.

mateysmum · 12/07/2025 12:15

A really basic point is that if you are moving around on foot at all, very often you only need to go one street back from the main drag and it's a different world. Oxford St is a prime example. On Oxford St itself you can barely move for people and there is lots of traffic noise. Walk up one of the side streets to the north and then turn parallel to Oxford St and you can walk in calm and (relative) quiet. My son, who is very noise/people sensitive often does this. There are also much quieter entrances into M&S/John Lewis etc.
Likewise Jermyn St runs parallel to Piccadilly but is so much quieter.
Does your DS have noise cancelling headphones? Great for cutting out noise etc on the tube.

viktoria · 12/07/2025 12:35

@WondererWanderer fair enough...
My main point however was suggesting to get up and out early when London is really empty.

dreamingbohemian · 12/07/2025 22:14

OP by sheer coincidence a friend went to the NHM today and mentioned stopping afterwards at a really nice and quiet park next door called Prince's Gardens, it's across the street to the northeast of the museum. Sounded really peaceful. Enjoy your trips :)

The reading room at the Wellcome Collection museum

This is no longer quiet. Took my dd during the last half term. It’s become popular on TikTok unfortunately.
