I posted last night that my 14 year old had been really tired and pale so i took her to the doctor thinkinh she would need iron tablets. We had the blood test at 11 ish and around sic the out of hours gp called to say that the lab had called them with the test results and then asked if she was conscious and was she visibly bleeding - obvsiously she was conscious and not visibly bleeding!

Even so they said we needed to take her up to the walk in centre at the hospital so they could “see if she was stable”. So we rushed up there thinking something awful was going on only to be in a queue for 3 hours and she had her vitals done. Then they said right shes ok over night (it was at least midnight at this point) but we needed to call gp first thing ro find out next steps. Oh they said she is severly anemic and has no meausrable folate a a few other things.

so this morning i called the gp and told them the recptionsit originally booked us a phone call tomorrow but then a couple of hours later called and said the doctor had actually seen the blood results now and could we go straight in. So we rushed off up there to be told again she is anemic and the results are just funky so she has got iron tablers but shes also got this urgent refferal to peadiatrics. The doctor said the wait was a maximum two weeks but she thinkins it will be alot less. So she was going to call them. She was checking all of my daughter glands asking about bruising and various other things. She said since her vitals are stable she didnt need to rush to hospital today but she did need to be seen urgently as she doesnt think the anemia would be caused by diet and my duaghter has light periods.

obviously my mind is screaming now but i was ij the room with my daughter who only 14 but also autistic - which is paet of the problem she doesnt describe symptoms well. So i couldnt just ask about my concerns outright it would have caused a major issue for my daughter.

the blood tests that i can remember were

iron 2
heamagolbin 8
platlets - slightly raised but cant rmemember a numbet
ferritin 13
and folate was too low to meausre so she said thats under 2
oh her b12 was high.

has anyone had this i was thibking simple anemia but the doctor seemed pretty sure this was being caused by an underlying issue and im quietyly freaking out while pretending not to in from of my dd.

i am obviosuly thinking what if its some kind of cancer because rhats the bog one everyone knwos about isnt it but i know there are so many other things it could be.

has anyone had this sort of thing? This referral how long are we talking the doctor seemed to think very soon but refferals in my experience are a long while even if or seems urgent.

any advice or chat appreicated im just sitting on the couch with a frozen smile trying to to freak out now!

I have no experience of this but hope all is ok.

I would ask for a copy of the results though, I have found this useful in the past because you can take them to appointments. I've been to paeds before and they've not been given the results so having a copy has sped things up.

What a worry, I am so sorry.

My daughter's b12 and platelets were always high with inflammation caused by her Crohn's. I wonder if she has some gut-related issue? My sister was severely anaemic when diagnosed with coeliac, and my daughter rather less severely with Crohn's disease.

did she havw an stomach issues before hand? My dd has never complained of anything she has been really well up until the last couple of months. They did mention they would prob test for celiac as well as other things.

I did wonder coeliac as soon as I read your first post. Dd has coeliac disease and her bloods were similar inc high b12 which I never really understood.

and i wouldn’t say she had bad stomach issues as such, she could be a little bit sick a few times every week, but just like a mouthful of sick which she’d normally swallow.

I’m not a medical expert, but I thought the many worry for cancer was to do with white blood cells rather than iron levels?

macaroonmayhem · 10/07/2025 21:43

not my child but me - I got an urgent call after a blood test and told to report to a&e immediately. I was severely anaemic and white cell count up and they wanted me in to see if I needed an iron infusion. Once they saw I was alright-ish (walking/talking/driving) they decided to just send me back to the GP to get iron tablets.

Hope you get some answers and a way forward soon.

Not my child but me, got a slightly panicked call from the Gp only a couple of hours after a blood test. In my case to do with liver function. All sorts of tests ordered, taken off all medication and told not to touch a drop of alcohol. They never did get to the bottom of it and they just sort of settled back down.

Try not to speculate too much Op because you’ll only stress yourself out more. In all probability it’ll turn out to be something easily treatable and she’ll soon feel better. I really hope and pray this is the case for you anyway Op.

What’s her diet like? I know you said they GP said it was unlikely diet related BUT I work in a job where I look at blood tests and I’ve had 2 patients in the last year or so with very similar (in fact one of them was significantly worse) blood tests who it ended up being diet related for. Both of these patients were autistic and had very limited diets as a result.
