Holiday room mess up!

On holiday in Greece with DH and our teens DD18 and DS17. When we booked we specifically searched for a place with 2 separate bedrooms. We found a self catering hotel apartment - 2 bedrooms (1 x twin, 1 x double) with a separate living room/kitchenette.
On arrival we were told we’d been “upgraded” only to be dropped at the room and find it’s 1 bedroom with 2 single sofa beds in the living room/kitchenette.
We went back to reception to be told the new room is superior and newer. We specifically wanted 2 bedrooms with the separate living room/kitchenette so we asked to have what we booked. Apparently there is not one available.
It seems they overbook the 2 bedrooms then try to “upgrade” you to a 1 bedroom with put you ups.
The head receptionist isn’t here until 9pm but we’ve been told there’s not a 2 bedroom to move us to. It’s a small hotel.
We booked with a reputable well known tour operator. They’re investigating but have also been told by hotel no one available to speak until 9pm.
I don’t want to overreact but we have no separate living areas. The teens and their luggage are in the living room. DD has ADHD and doesn’t sleep great so we won’t be able to get a cup of tea/breakfast etc until they’re awake each day.
I don’t even know what option we have but to put up with it! Had a horrible few months and I know there’s worse things and that this is minor for 14 days.
Realistically what can the tour operator do when in reality we have enough beds to sleep on and the hotel is saying they don’t have a spare 2 bedroom for us? I just feel what we have is not what we paid for. I’m not after money.
I think I just needed to vent a bit. I’m probably tired, up since 2.30am. I’m irritated too that they tried to tell us it was an upgrade!

Great that you’ve sorted it out , at the end of the holiday definitely leave an honest review about the rude and unhelpful receptionist from last night . Hope you enjoy your holiday from now .

Meltedchocs · 11/07/2025 10:23

Well done for standing your ground Op.
sounds massively stressful.
glad it’s sorted. Enjoy the rest of your holiday x

OccasionalHope · 11/07/2025 10:25

That looks very nice, OP, I’m glad the TUI people appear to have been helpful.

I’m pleased it’s sorted @MummyChocolateMonster . Enjoy the rest of your holiday

Hurrah (over invested in your room situation). Enjoy the hols!!!

Totally annoying when you spend ages finding the right place, pay for it and they give you a poor substitute.

anyolddinosaur · 11/07/2025 10:30

Glad you have your room sorted. Decide what YOU want in compensation and ask for a bit more. So if you are b&b maybe a full dinner with wine.

CeeJay81 · 11/07/2025 10:31

Been following and glad it was sorted. We search like mad for simular accommodatin and would not have been happy if this happened. Hopefully they'll compensate you with something nice too😁

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/07/2025 10:33

Fantastic. enjoy your hols

I was so particular about the 2 bedroom thing before our much-researched hols that I rang up jet 2 beforehand to get them to guarantee as far as they could that that’s what I would get (not least because their description didn’t quite match what the hotel website said). All was well but I was practicing my “complaint speech” (in Spanish!)in case it didn’t work out. Luckily it was fine but I totally get how important this is.

SpidersAreShitheads · 11/07/2025 10:44

Yay! Pleased for you OP. I hope you get a bit of compensation as what happened yesterday is not ok!!

Enjoy the rest of your holiday 💐

Twiglets1 · 11/07/2025 10:45

I'm pleased it's sorted for you @MummyChocolateMonster

I hadn't commented but was following your thread with interest.

Sweetleftfood · 11/07/2025 10:49

Nice one OP, who wants to make up sofa beds every night. Totally different to what you booked. Glad it got sorted

LilacReader · 11/07/2025 11:00

I had this with TUI a couple of years ago - managed to get moved rooms after a few days but they were no help at all, and in fact it was TUI that changed the rooms around just before we left to go on the holiday!

AngryBird6122 · 11/07/2025 11:06

yay! enjoy your break OP

Muchtoomuchtodo · 11/07/2025 11:10

Great news op.

You did your homework and booked what would work for your family, I’m so pleased you can all relax and enjoy yourselves now

ShiftingSand · 11/07/2025 11:22

I’m sorry this has happened to you. It reminds me of The White Lotus where the son
sleeps in the kitchen and his sister and her friend are in the living room😊 Hope you can get it sorted out soon. Looks like you have, I didn’t read all the posts 🤭

MistressThere · 11/07/2025 11:27

So glad you’re all sorted now, well done on standing your ground! We’re very much about two separate bedrooms, so I understand entirely. You do so much research on these things it has to be right.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 11/07/2025 11:32

So glad it’s sorted - and that you stood firm, OP! If people meekly put up with this sort of nonsense, they’ll only do it all the more.

DrNo007 · 11/07/2025 11:32

Get them to move you to another hotel and the current place and/or Tui must refund you for the nights you haven't stayed in the downgrade or else give full refund. A hotel did as much for us when they had a flooding disaster and we could not stay there. Sorry--edited to say just noticed your update and it's sorted. Well done.

themostspecialelfintheworkshop · 11/07/2025 11:46

Glad it's sorted OP.

I've started booking direct with hotels (and flights separately) because of this sort of thing and then double and triple checking before I get there. It's clear most people want separate bedrooms. If they wanted 'beds in living room' that's what they would choose. It's cheeky fuckery of the first order to try and pass off an obvious downgrade as an 'upgrade'.

There are a long list of reasons why people might want separate bedrooms - if you book it you should get it. Hope you get the first night completely refunded - this is what they should do.

Can you share the bedroom with your DD and your partner and son take the living room?

You don't go on holiday to share a room with a child (teen) rather than your partner. I'd be furious too and demanding two one bedroomed apartments.
Good luck OP

AdaColeman · 11/07/2025 11:55

Excellent news that you've now got the room you booked and paid for.
Really, it was the TUI Rep's job to have sorted the problem out with the hotel before you arrived, you shouldn't have had all the upset.

Have a great holiday!

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 11/07/2025 12:04

Pleased you got sorted OP.

I get this often travelling with my older teen. I specifically book a two single bed room as they don't want to share a double bed with me. Then we get there and we've been moved into a room with a double bed.

Last weekend we went to an event and arrived at the hotel only to find we'd been upgraded to a superior double with a double bed, a sofa and a bigger TV.

I asked for the twin room that I'd booked but was told the hotel was fully booked. The receptionist made me feel so ungrateful and kept saying how the room was better as it had a nice sofa for watching the TV.

Thing was, we arrived late evening intending to go straight to bed. We were out after breakfast until late evening at the event. Then we got up next morning and travelled home. All we wanted to do in the room was sleep and shower. We had no interest sitting on a nice sofa watching TV.

The hotel did bring a pop up bed and some bedding but it wasn't as comfy for teen and the room ended up quite cramped as their feet had to go under the dressing table to fit the pop up bed in and they had to climb over it to open the curtains.

jocktamsonsbairn · 11/07/2025 12:07

We had this a few years ago with Thomas Cook. I stood my ground as they had give. Us a really shitty maisonette with a loft bedroom that no one could stand up in. We spent one night in it then got moved to a much nicer maisonette as the 2 bedrooms apartment I had booked was in use. Made sure I complained in resort using their forms, took loads of photos and fought it big style when we got home. Got the accommodation costs of the holiday refunded. Just be very calm and factual, get it in writing in resort. They have taken your money and not given you what you paid for. Hope you get it resolved.

Alltheyellowbirds · 11/07/2025 12:12

Don’t know what going on with all the posters trying to make out that OP is just confused and it’s somehow her fault.

She booked an apartment with TWO bedrooms and a living space, and got an apartment with ONE bedroom and a living space.

They were two different options offered by the hotel, she chose one but found herself in the other.

It’s as clear as day that she hadn’t got the apartment she booked.

Glad it’s sorted now OP.

GnomeDePlume · 11/07/2025 12:14

Well done for sticking to your guns and getting it sorted.
