LLETZ and CIN 2

Hi all,

I had colposcopy today and a biopsy was taken. (3 HPV positive smears and last one showed borderline changes). The consultant said she believed it may be CIN2 once the procedure was finished and asked if I wanted more dc in the future. I’m 27 so would potentially want more but I’m more than content with my 2dc.

I’m pretty sure she said they would either do LLETZ or colposcopy and biopsy every 6 months if I did want more children. As I’ve had HPV for 3+ years and it hasn’t budged (despite quitting smoking), I’m thinking if it’s best to just get the LLETZ treatment. I’m not sure if she meant they would decide or if it was my choice once the biopsy results come back.

Has anyone had LLETZ and did it affect your fertility?

Any advice greatly appreciated 🙂

I had carcinoma in situ and have had 3 LLETZ procedures over the years. They have taken a big chunk of my cervix! I went to have one more child. They kept an eye for incompetent cervix while I was pregnant and had internal scans, but then I had the opposite issue and the scar tissue from the LLETZ had basically sealed my cervix shut in places and I had a big cervical tear while labouring.

@LuckysDadsHat thanks very much for your reply! I think I will choose the LLETZ if they offer it as I’m quite worried it’s already turned into CIN2 since my last smear last year!

Its the best thing to get it taken away. You can still possibly have children, LLETZ doesnt usually take that away from you at all. Good luck with it all

Thanks so much! I’m really sorry to hear you had the cervical tear during labour too!

I had Lletz twice for CIN3. Conceived and laboured multiple times just fine.

Oh, incidentally, if you have LLETZ, take the next day off. It didn't hurt (and I have an exceptionally low pain threshold!) but I was a bit wobbly for the next 24 hours.

@ByLimeAnt I'm due to have one - do you think I'll be okay to drive home afterwards if I take a break at the hospital coffee shop first? I don't have anyone nearby to take me. Thanks.

I had to have someone to pick me up, but it may have changed now as my last one was 2013.

I had one at 25 and had a baby at 35 no problem . It wasn’t even mentioned , which in hindsight it probably should have been but it clearly didn’t cause any issues . Unfortunately the pregnancy cussed the HPV to come back so no doubt I will end up needing another one. Been + for over 5 years now.

FindingMeno · 11/07/2025 05:58

I've had it for borderline changes and went on to have another child with no issues whatsoever.
I echo what has been said about being collected by someone afterwards.

I had LLETZ when I was 20 for CIN3, HPV negative. Never any mention of it impacting my fertility back then. I did develop PCOS as an adult which caused fertility issues, rather than LLETZ but I now have 2 children.

@Redflagsabounded , might be worth talking to the department on their guidelines? Good luck!

Update - I had it this morning. I was shaking like a leaf afterwards (they said normal) but they gave me some water and sat me down for few minutes. Went to the coffee shop, had a toastie and a pot of tea and was completely fine after 30 mins and able to drive home. Still feel good a few hours later - no bleeding or cramps - better than after the colposcopy biopsies.

Beeloux · 01/08/2025 16:55

Thanks all for your replies! @Redflagsabounded so glad to hear it went well and wasn’t painful ❤️

I got my biopsy results back a couple days ago, turns out just to be CIN1 so will have another smear next year. I’ve stopped vaping and started taking vitamins so hopeing it will clear up by then.

Thanks so much again!

Oh yeah, I've been told to give up vaping too as nicotine affects your healing.

They only asked if I was a smoker. No. Luckily I volunteered that I vape though. They need to update that question...
