Hand Flapping

Sorry if I haven’t posted in the right place.

Does any one else’s DC flap their hands when excited?

My nearly 9 year old does this often and I‘m not sure if it’s normal or not.

Sounds like stimming. It’s repetitive movements to help deal with emotions. It’s very common in autistic people but lots of people who aren’t autistic also do it.

Has she only just started doing this? Any other repetitive behaviours? Any copying of words or sentences?

My daughter does this but no other autistic traits. She jumps up and down too!

He‘s always done this.

He also bounces on all fours when watching TV or playing, and when he goes to bed.

No copying of words.

I think hand flapping normally stops by age 3, 9 is quite unusual. I doubt you'd get far though if it's the only issue he has. How is he socially with his peers? If he's fine at the moment I'd just note it down and see how he goes. Sometimes things only become more obvious around secondary school age. We still had no idea when DS was 9.

Twiddling a curl of your hair whilst driving along is stimming, so don't dive straight down the A word hole purely on a bit of a hand flap.
